For Pride Month, we're honored to share the story of Sarah Schwimmer, a freelance Expedition Leader, mariner, and founder of The Vagabondist.
Sarah's career has taken her from the waters of Chicago to some of the most remote places on Earth, leading expeditions from Antarctica to the Arctic. Her journey began with the Mariner Scouts, where she first discovered a love for sailing and the freedom she found on the water.
Like many women in maritime, Sarah faced challenges throughout her career. As an LGBTQ+ professional, those challenges often felt even more complex.
"There have been times I felt so unwelcome and unsafe that I genuinely considered walking away from this industry."
Rather than waiting for the industry to change, Sarah chose to create the kind of spaces she wished had existed when she was starting out. Through The Vagabondist, she leads expeditions designed to foster connection, inclusion, and a deep appreciation for the natural world.
One message she hopes others will hear:
"Hang in there. There will be times when you don't see anyone else like you in the room. If that feels isolating, know you are not alone, even when it doesn't feel that way."
When asked what representation means to her, Sarah reflected on the power of visibility:
"Every q***r mariner who shows up fully, every female captain who takes the helm, every shipboard manager who creates safe spaces changes what the next person believes is possible."
πThank you, Sarah, for sharing your story, your perspective, and your commitment to creating opportunities for others to feel seen, supported, and welcomed in maritime.
