GREAT NEWS FROM HAWAIʻI DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION: Effective immediately, Mauiʻs state highways will no longer be sprayed with glyphosate/Roundup AND all use of glyphosate on highways will be phased out by the end of 2022 STATEWIDE. Beyond Pesticides' Autumn Ness says: "Mahalo to everyone who has been working on this since at least 2014. Adding this to our list of wins means that we are in a much better place than we were 10 years ago. Over the years we have passed the following policies:
-No synthetic pesticides or fertilizers can be used on Maui County owned lands
-No synthetic herbicides can be used on any Department of Education school grounds in Hawaiʻi
-No glyphosate based herbicides can be used in Hawaiʻi County parks
-No glyphosate based herbicides will be used on state highways in Hawaiʻi.
I am so proud of how far weʻve come. Working toward big change is long, complicated, and often frustrating, but weʻre doing it. Agency by agency. Mahalo nui to all of you who keep showing up.
**Important note: The DOT and DOE policies are not law, they are just agency policies. That means that if leadership changes, these rules could change too. Itʻs up to us to keep those agencies accountable. When you see the DOT guys mowing instead of spraying, throw ʻem a shaka and a cheeeeeeehuuuuuu. If thereʻs a bit of a traffic jam behind the w**d trimmer truck, cut them some slack. Letʻs be patient with the crews while they navigate different ways of doing their jobs, without these nasty chemicals."
