The county commissioner seat up for election is for Lorraine Quintana, District 2.

🏛️ WHAT DOES THE BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS DO?

The Costilla County Board of County Commissioners plays one of the biggest roles in local government. These elected officials help oversee county budgets, roads, land use, emergency services, county departments, grants, and long-term planning decisions that affect residents every day.

County Commissioners also:
✔️ Approve county spending and budgets
✔️ Help oversee infrastructure and roads
✔️ Work with state and local agencies
✔️ Make decisions on county policies and services
✔️ Represent the needs of residents across the county

These positions may not always make national headlines, but the decisions made at the county level directly impact taxpayers, businesses, families, and the future growth of Costilla County.

In Costilla County, County Commissioners must live in their district — but the entire county votes for them.

That means even if a candidate represents a different district, all registered voters in the county may still help decide that race.

This system is called an “at-large” election system and is meant to ensure commissioners represent the interests of the whole county.

🚨 SHERIFF’S RACE IN COSTILLA COUNTY

The Sheriff’s Office has received major public attention this year after criminal indictments involving former Sheriff Danny Sanchez and others in the department. The court date scheduled for 5/26 was pushed to 7/14.

Interim Sheriff Joe Smith was appointed and is running as a write-in Republican candidate.

Other candidates campaigning for Sheriff include:

Cruz Soto, Democrat
Joe Maestas, Democrat
Kirk Taylor, Republican
Paul Quintana, Independent

You may have noticed some candidates campaigning publicly while others have been quiet. This month is generally where you see Meet & Greets being scheduled, political floats at events, etc.

📌 WHAT IF I’M INDEPENDENT BUT WANT TO VOTE DEMOCRAT or REPUBLICAN?

In Colorado, if you are registered with a political party, you generally vote in THAT party’s primary election.

Example:
• Republicans vote in the Republican primary
• Democrats vote in the Democratic primary

If you are registered as UNAFFILIATED, you can choose which party primary ballot you want to vote in — but you can only vote in ONE party’s primary.

So, for example, you can't vote for a Democrat Sheriff candidate and a Republican County Commissioner. If you do, the entire ballot will be thrown out - it will NOT count.

You can update your voter registration or party affiliation online:
