Grand Companions
has designed and pioneered a new housing concept for our shelter pets. Our facility is designed to house the pets with the staff during the day as the staff runs the organization. This concept nearly eliminates kennel stress and anxiety and allows our pets to have constant interaction with people all day. With the upper level administration being responsible for the daily care, this is easily done due to the facilities unique design, all our staff members truly know each pet, allowing for making the proper matches between adopters and their new pet. In addition, all the pets are exposed to the things they will encounter when going to their new home – here we teach them about doors, crates, popping trash bags, people constantly coming and going, which inherently teaches the dogs, in particular, to have no anxiety or expectations as a person comes and goes. Many studies have documented that traditional sheltering causes a dog to become ‘kennel sour’ within 2 weeks of intake, making them less and less adoptable as time passes. The environment of the Sweet Suite Shelter allows the dogs to learn the house manners that will successfully transition them into a new home. Grand Companions will continue to methodically develop this concept through controlled study in order to create a repeatable system that will easily, efficiently and successfully be used to establish satellite shelters in other communities.
