Friday 9/27: Today we completed our adventure returning to the van after a quick pack up and hike. Now it’s time to drive back to town where the luxuries and conveniences of modern life await. But this week in the backcountry was special, it opened our eyes to what lies within. It renewed our gratitude for what we have at home and it forged friendships that have a special bond that no one else will ever understand. The struggles were as great as the triumphs which helped add more color to our character, the teamwork made it possible, and this is what is was about all along.

Thursday 6/26: Marvine Lakes was stunning! Two large mountain lakes, surrounded by towering mountains that rise from the beautiful green forests with towering red volcanic cliffs to their Flat Topped summits. We couldn’t help but soak in the ambiance and milk every minute we had to be in this place. So we enjoyed our slow morning or fishing, dice and card games, and we even cooked lunch before we started trekking toward the trailhead. The lazy morning was a welcomed change of pace and allowed us to relax throughout the morning. The trail that departed from the lakes was dusty and downhill. We shared it with a horse pack trip that was using horses and mules to do what we were doing with packs strapped to our backs and boots on our feet. As we dropped in elevation the temps rose and the sun beat down on us as the trail crossed the meadows strew in wildflowers. We were quickly hiking the final miles of our loop but soaking up every moment. We encountered a few water crossings that required us to take off our boots to wade the streams. The cold water rinsed our now sore, stinky, and filthy feet. It brought smiles to our faces as we enjoyed the cool water. Each crossing turned into a long break as we soaked in these final hours in the backcountry. Although we were close to the trailhead we would wait until tomorrow to leave this beautiful place. As we were about a mile from the trailhead we found our final camping spot for the trip. Serendipitously and slightly desperately (because we were tired from the insanely dusty trail and sun beating down on us all day) we found a site that sat on the bank of the Marvine Creek, complete with a fire ring and just enough prime flat spots for our groups’ tents. We each dipped in the river, cleansing the dust and renewing our spirits. We played games around the campfire, enjoyed some surprise snacks, and reveled in the experience we had all just shared. What an epic week!

Wednesday 6/25: We woke up atop the Flat Tops and were all still reveling in their beauty. Distant peaks decorated the horizon all around us. But the clouds were building and darkening as the morning progressed which gave us our obvious cue to get packed and on trail. Leaving this campsite gave us a new experience, one that we had yet to feel - we got to hike downhill! The group moved fast and efficiently and the miles flew by as fast as the clouds across the sky. After a few descending switchbacks the large Marvine Lakes were in sight! There were almost too many good camping spots to choose from but we found the perfect patch of grass to call home. Located near the bank of the lake, a beautiful view, a perfect fire pit, and just enough flat smooth surfaces for us to set up our tents. After choosing our location, we did our now ‘usual set-up camp protocol’. We unpacked our tents in our tent groups, laid down our tarp footprints, tested the ground for flatness, and then ran the poles through our mesh tent, attached the rainfly, and staked it out. Within minutes of staking down our tents the rain began to fall. Although it was loud inside of our tents as the rain showered down, it was a short storm, one that washed the landscape and provided perfect lighting to accentuate the landscape and the waterscape. The rains also gave our group a new energy as we rallied to get out into the water. Some of us assembled fishing poles and searched until we found the perfect fishing hole while others opted to take a dip in the lake. The cold water was refreshing and rejuvenating. We were all happy to call this place home for the night, our most stunning campsite yet!

Tuesday 6/24: Today we tackled the final continuous uphill of our loop. We had to rehike the mile we descended yesterday which went by in a breeze with our fresh legs. As we got higher the views only improved. And after several switchbacks we found ourselves walking over the rolling hills and small ponds that make up the tops of these Flat Topped mountains. Excited to have a majority of the uphill below us we enjoyed a long lunch of pita pizzas in celebration. The pizzas were good but we were mores happy to eat another meal and remove another load from our staked backpacks. But soon after lunch the trail faded and eventually vanished which left our Leaders Of The Day keeping a close eye on the map and the scattered cairn rock piles which lead us to our goal for the day, Twin Lakes. One by one the cairns pointed us in the right direction and sent us over a slight hill to reveal two large high alpine lakes sitting atop the flat topped mountain meadow. We were so stoked to be at camp because we knew this would be our highest point of elevation gain on our loop. This meant the rest of the trip would be primarily downhill! We were all exhausted but elated to be at camp. Some of us fished while others took a cat nap but soon enough we were playing intense games of farkle and frisbee. We closed the night as we sat around the campfire and hunted for constellations in the clear night sky. With tired legs but a growing stoke for our adventure we went to bed with a chorus of frogs signing us lullabies deep into the night.

Monday 6/23: Waking up early meant it was too cool for the mosquitos and we enjoyed the relief! Before we could head to the trailhead we needed to sort and pack all of our gear and food we would need for the week. But we made quick work of this task before we eagerly set out to the East Marvine TH.

Sometimes it takes awhile to get out of town and into the perfect corner of wilderness. 6 hours of total driving got us to right where we needed to be. We parked at the trailhead and assessed the map to choose which direction we would hike the loop. We decided to go counterclockwise to attack the steep uphill first and leave the prized Marvine Lakes for the tail end of our trip. Luckily even this side of the loop presented spectacular views. As we passed one flooded meadow we spotted a dam and soon a beaver was swimming across the pond to return home. We pressed on past a few more lakes aiming particularly for Mary’s Loch Lake. But unfortunately after a demanding uphill we realized that our sights were set on a rather precarious trail. It was hardly used and hard to follow so we reluctantly decided to retreat to a meadow that meant we had to retrace our footsteps and add extra miles to our days trek. As soon as we arrived in our camping spot for the night, a few of us immediately ran and jumped in the lake, looking for a refreshing rinse after such a hot and uphill day. Our feet punched into the water to find many feet of algae and loose muck only a few feet below the surface. Unfortunately, we ended up a bit more dirty than we had started, but we were still happy and refreshed to rinse the heat from the day and to finally be at camp! In the end it was worth having a cozy meadow to call home for the night.

Sunday 6/22: After meeting in Fort Collins we headed to the high country, happy to be in the crisp and cool mountain air. We arrived at our campsite on Rabbit Ears Pass and began by learning how to set up our tents and use our camp stoves. As a group we each cooked a part of our Burrito Bar dinner and tried to enjoy the fruits of our labor but the mosquitos had a different agenda. Instead, many of us danced around the campsite as we balanced our dinner in one hand and swatted mosquitos with the other. Regardless, we were happy to be camping! Soon, the group went for a short hike to Dumont Lake before enjoying s’mores around our first campfire.
