SFC Matt Blaskowski served in 2nd Battalion (Airborne), 503rd Infantry Regiment, 173rd Airborne Brigade Combat Team, as an infantryman.
During combat operations in support of Operation ENDURING FREEDOM, on 3 May 2005, in Afghanistan, SSG Blaskowski displayed undaunted gallantry and valor without regard for his own safety under heavy enemy machine gun and RPG fire for over four hours while wounded near Bulac Kalay, Afghanistan in the Arghandab Valley.
Numerous times, SSG Blaskowski placed himself at great risk while engaging the enemy positions and relaying directions to his machine gun crews. SSG Blaskowski’s unwavering valor and understanding of his mission fixed a determined enemy and prevented them from maneuvering in any direction, thereby allowing 1st Platoon to destroy 17 enemy in the orchard, breaking all resistance in the valley.
SSG Blaskowski fought with dogged determination even after he was wounded in the leg pulling a wounded solider to safety, maintaining his position for another hour until he was able to help other wounded soldiers (his teammates) to safety.
He received the Silver Star and the Purple Heart for his actions that day.
Two years later, Matt was killed in action during combat operations in Asadabad, Kunar, Afghanistan. 23 September 2007.
We remember Matt and his courage and valor. When the situation was toughest, Matt put his teammates first.
