Striking differences between being born in a universal health care system in Sweden vs the United States (SEE BELOW!)

A study out of Sweden examined the total cost of care for 344 neonates born before 24 weeks gestation.

The greatest health care costs were incurred during the first year of life with a average total cost for care being 3,247,000 Swedish Kroners (about 340000 USD) over the first 14 years of life.

Neonatal morbidities, including bronchopulmonary dysplasia, treated retinopathy of prematurity, and severe intraventricular haemorrhage, were associated with sustained long-term costs.

By comparison, costs in the United States would most likely surpass this amount in the neonatal period alone. One study demonstrated expenditures of $603,778 in the first 6 months (Beam, A.L., Fried, I., Palmer, N. et al. Estimates of healthcare spending for preterm and low-birthweight infants in a commercially insured population: 2008–2016. J Perinatol 40, 1091–1099 (2020).)!

New study explores intranasal administration of mother’s milk in babies after hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy?

The rationale is compelling: human milk contains stem cells, growth factors, anti-inflammatory mediators, and neurotrophic factors, and intranasal delivery may allow biologically active components to reach the brain through olfactory pathways.

Treatment tolerated in all 10 babies in this pilot study

Many mechanisms involved in preterm IVH overlap with hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE) in term infants—neuroinflammation, oxidative stress, and impaired repair.

Could intranasal mother’s milk become a simple adjunctive neuroprotective therapy for term infants with HIE?
