🚨URGENT CALL TO ACTION SIGN TO SAVE NYC COMPOSTING🚨 Why should I sign this?
Urge the Mayor and City Council to halt the elimination of community compost programs and to guarantee full funding to these programs for the future! Mayor Adams is eliminating The New York City Compost Project and GrowNYC’s compost funding, which serves millions of New Yorkers throughout the five boroughs, providing food scrap collections, organics processing, composting outreach and community education.
What is community composting?
Community composting programs collect and turn New Yorkers’ food waste into rich compost for our parks, gardens & playground as well as provide valuable education and outreach resources. These programs are a critical tool in the fight against climate change.
Who is impacted by the cuts?
Community composting organizations include GrowNYC, Big Reuse, LES Ecology Center, Earth Matter NY, New York Botanical Garden, Queens Botanical Garden, Brooklyn Botanic Garden, and Snug Harbor Cultural Center & Botanical Garden.
Every New Yorker! These budget cuts will eliminate valuable opportunities to compost their food scraps, in turn adding them back into the waste stream, feeding rats!
Do we need it even though Curbside Composting is coming?
There cannot be a successful Curbside Composting program in New York City without a strong outreach and community composting network to educate New Yorkers. Budget cuts are also delaying curbside composting expansion to Staten Island and the Bronx until at least October 2024. Community composting organizations also focus largely on the production of finished compost used to improve soils, while curbside composting largely uses anaerobic digestion to process food scraps.
