In March 1982, Ted Bushelman, a former Channel 12 and CBS sports director, was asked to teach an access class for Storer Cable. Ted designed a lesson plan for the class to teach the public how to do one-camera programs. After the final night of classes, a question was posed, “Where do we go from here to do a show with more than one camera?” Ted asked Ken Luxenberger, the fire chief at CVG, who, a
long with Joe Sorg, an airport volunteer (and who are still with the Cable One), to take down the name and phone number of each interested person in the class. The group’s initial filming experiences began with airport-sanctioned functions-the employee Christmas show, inaugural flights celebrations, presidential arrivals and eventually, training films for the airport fire and police departments. Today the group has about 25 volunteers who televise mostly live programs covering basketball and football for high school and Thomas More College. Cable One can also be depended upon to broadcast at various Northern Kentucky festivals to include 38 hours at the Main Strasse Maifest, and 30 hours at Newport’s yearly Italian Festival. In 2005, they added coverage of some local Florence Freedom Baseball games. The volunteers contribute over 250 hours a year behind the camera, and countless additional hours on preparation, equipment maintenance, editing, etc. Sadly, we lost our founder Ted Bushelman in March 2011. While we miss him dearly, as both a producer and friend, the group has committed to continue to broadcast in his honor. Details of what that will look like are still being hashed out, but we continue to be committed to serving the entire Northern Kentucky community by providing high quality broadcasts of community events through the dedication and talents of local volunteers. Cable One is an all volunteer, non-profit organization. While some fundraising activities generate operational funds, the volunteers primarily depend on Northern Kentucky businesses and agencies that wish to keep All Volunteer Cable One programming a viable component of the cable television community.
