This quick quiz takes about 5 minutes and may give some insight as to whether or not your teenager is at risk, and what help is available for both you and your teen

You’ve just received an opioid prescription for your teenager. On the one hand, you may think, “If my doctor prescribed this, it must be safe.” There are obviously times when such medications are needed, helpful and should be taken. On the other hand, you may be worried about just how risky it is for your child to take opioids.

The bottom line is that it's okay to ask questions of your doctor. In fact, we encourage it! That’s how you can become fully aware of the risks of these medications and minimize the chances that your child will misuse them. Here are some questions to consider:

Is a prescription opioid necessary to treat their pain? Would alternatives like an over-the-counter pain reliever work?
How many pills are being prescribed and over how long a period? Is it necessary to prescribe this amount of pills?
What are the risks of misuse of this drug?
What are the potential interactions between this medication and other medications? Between this and alcohol or other substances they may be using?

TAKE CARE OF YOUR MENTAL HEALTH

Increased stress can lead to increases in alcohol and substance use. If you or someone you care about is starting to use alcohol or other substances, or is increasing their use during the COVID-19 pandemic, here are a few suggestions that may help:

-Contact your healthcare provider.

-Locate virtual treatment and recovery programs.

-Medication-assisted treatment for alcohol or opioid use disorders may be an option.

-Take medicine as prescribed and continue your therapy, treatment, or support appointments (in person or through telehealth services) when possible.

-Call the National Drug and Alcohol Treatment Referral Routing Service (1-800-662-HELP) to speak with someone about an alcohol or substance use problem.

People with a substance use disorder may already be marginalized by health care services, largely because of stigma. Much of this stigma is based on the mistaken but continuing belief that addiction is the result of weak character and poor choices. It is not.
Science has clearly shown it to be a disorder that results from changes in brain circuitry.

It is important that all people with a substance use disorder be treated with compassion and dignity.

We are all dealing with social distancing in our own way. Don't mistake social distancing for social isolation. There are many ways to stay in touch with loved ones, family and friends. For some, anxiety is through the roof...depression and stress, for some may be increasing. It's important to seek help in order to manage and cope during these challenging times. We are all in this together..Let's look to support each other during these challenging times. Stay kind to each other, but most important, stay healthy.

Each person responds to stress in different ways. In this Director’s message, Dr. Gordon talks about managing fear, anxiety, and stress related to the coronavirus pandemic.
