Breaking News | June 18 2026

ICE abandons Romulus detention center plan!!

Following strong community opposition, ICE has decided to abandon its plans to repurpose a Romulus warehouse into a large detention facility in Detroit.

This victory would not have been possible without the incredible organizing of residents, community leaders, and advocates in Detroit and across the state. Once again, we are reminded that community power, resistance, and solidarity are how our movements win.

We want to give a special shoutout to our partners at NDCM. Their advocacy and commitment were an important part of the broader coalition efforts that helped make this victory possible.

FAIR is committed to our work with NDCM and other statewide partners to abolish ICE and all immigration detention in Michigan and beyond.

Make no mistake: this is the people's victory.

A father and asylum seeker in our community is preparing for an immigration hearing in July and urgently needs legal representation.

Next Saturday (June 20) we will be gathering together at the UAW 659 for our June teach in! We hope you will join us to learn together, identify ways to take action in our communities and advance the immigrant justice movement in Flint/Genesee county.

Last week, congress approved an additional massive $70 billion funding package for ICE and CBP. This will fund both agencies through the remainder of Trumps presidential term and will continue to allow the violence and abuse to harm our immigrant communities across the country.

Despite this setback and the other egregious attacks made by this administration and congress- we will not relent. We will continue to uplift and lean into the power of community. We will continue to support individuals and families impacted by detention and deportation. We will continue to educate and stand in solidarity. We will continue to take action collectively- to build and sustain the momentum for the change we know is possible.

executed arrest warrants at several locations across several states targeting pro-Palestine activism in southeast Michigan.
The situation is evolving and additional asks will roll out.

Please show up to the Federal Court Building (231 W Lafayette) in Detroit at 12pm for a rally if you are able to. Please spread the word.

Today, the Senate voted to give $70 billion more to ICE and CBP for the next three years. This is in addition to the $140 billion the agencies already received last year. Now the funding bill heads to the house. There is still time to action!

In this clip, a person who was detained in Calhoun County Correctional Facility (one of the jails that is serving as a concentration camp to execute this administration's dirty work) shares information about the treatment he received from guards and ICE officials. Listen to his account, his pain, his experience. This is happening in every concentration camp (i.e., detention center) around the country. Free them all!
