Here is a fact you may want to know before choosing interventions. God bless you!

“The epidural only stays in the mother’s back.”

That’s one of the biggest lies women are told in modern obstetrics.

Many epidurals contain opioids like fentanyl.

And yes, those medications can cross the placenta and reach the baby.

Yet somehow we’re expected to believe drugs powerful enough to numb labor, alter hormones, drop blood pressure, require continuous monitoring, IV fluids, urinary catheters, positioning restrictions, and additional interventions have absolutely zero impact on breastfeeding?

Interesting.

Because breastfeeding is not just about “milk.”

It’s an intricate hormonal and neurological dance between mother and baby.

Labor hormones matter.
Oxytocin matters.
Catecholamines matter.
Alertness matters.
Skin-to-skin matters.
The newborn’s reflexes matter.

And epidurals can potentially influence all of those things.

Possible effects discussed in research include:
⚡ sleepier babies after birth
⚡ altered newborn feeding behaviors
⚡ difficulty with latch in some dyads
⚡ delayed first feed
⚡ reduced maternal mobility during labor
⚡ increased intervention rates that can further impact breastfeeding
⚡ higher likelihood of separation, extra monitoring, or instrumental delivery in some cases
⚡ altered hormonal signaling during labor and postpartum

That does not mean every epidural ruins breastfeeding.

Plenty of women breastfeed successfully after epidurals.

But pretending there are no trade-offs whatsoever is not “pro-woman.”

Women deserve full informed consent.

Not watered-down marketing slogans designed to keep compliance high.

And before people scream:
“Formula exists!”
“Fed is best!”
“Healthy baby is all that matters!”

Stop right there.

The point is women deserve accurate information about how interventions may influence physiology so they can make decisions that align with their goals.

You cannot claim birth interventions are harmless while simultaneously admitting they alter labor, hormones, contractions, blood pressure, fetal heart rate patterns, mobility, pushing, temperature regulation, and newborn behavior.

Birth physiology and breastfeeding physiology are connected.
They are not separate systems.

And women deserve to know that before signing consent forms. God bless you and your birth! His birth His way!! 🙌🙏

❤️🫀 The placenta is an extremely intelligent, temporary organ your body grows during pregnancy to oxygenate and nourish your baby. After birth, it typically separates on its OWN as the uterus contracts.

In physiologic (undisturbed) third stage:
• The uterus continues contracting
• The placenta naturally detaches from the uterine wall
• It’s delivered without force, pushing or traction

Rushing this process, especially with early pulling (traction) or unnecessary intervention can increase risks like:
• Retained placental fragments
• Hemorrhage
• Pain / discomfort

(Not med advice) In certain medical situations, removing the placenta ASAP can be necessary, but that is not the case for most standard deliveries. You’re allowed to say PAUSE, and ask for some time for your placenta to detach naturally. ❤️🫀
