Terra BIRDS Terra BIRDS educates and empowers youth through gardening to help prepare them as the stewards of a sustainable future. We employed 45 young people in 2023.

Terra BIRDS was founded to address some of the challenging educational, environmental, and socio-economic issues we are facing as a community through our innovative, multi-faceted, hands-on education programs that focus on sustainability and youth empowerment. Our School Gardens Program leads elementary students in the responsibility of caring for school gardens and grounds. We serve 13 schools and over 2,000 students annually. BIRDS@WORK provides green collar jobs that are, in many cases, a first job or an opportunity underserved or at-risk youth ages 18-22. Terra BIRDS recognizes that a key to make lasting, positive changes lies in empowering youth with knowledge, skills and self-confidence that is accomplished through collaborative, just, and sustainability-oriented education. Please consider making a tax-deductible donation today to support our important work. Thank you!

We brought a little dose of werifesteria to our lessons at Pine Forest today, with students channeling Andy Goldsworthy through nature-inspired art and ephemeral creations around their garden space. What a fun day!

Who needs the colors of the rainbow when we have the colors of all this beautiful corn?! 😍

The Flagstaff High School garden crop is turning out beautifully (literally!) this year. We love our work with Emily Musta and her classes!

🌳 Happy Arbor Day from Terra BIRDS! 🌱

Today, we celebrated Arbor Day at Marshall Elementary, where we planted a very cool Alligator Juniper with some even cooler 4th graders! 🌲💚

Today's little tree has plenty of growing to do, and we're excited to watch it grow alongside the students who helped plant it!

Never leave a job unfinished!! We're starting our work week off strong 💪

Today we returned to Marshall Elementary to complete the transition of their garden beds into the newly designated garden space. Seeing how quickly our BIRDS@Work crew finished the last bits of this portion of the project makes us that much more excited for August to roll around—the students at Marshall and their Fusion Friday Garden Club are going to be so excited! 🤩

This summer, our BIRDS@Work program is taking a closer look at the forests that make Northern Arizona such a special place 🌲🌱 Through hands-on stewardship projects and community engagement, our youth are exploring what it means to care for and protect the landscapes that surround us.

To celebrate receiving the National Forest Foundation's Matching Awards Program (MAP) Grant, we invited our friend Mark Nabel, Silviculturist with the U.S. Forest Service, to join us for a day of tree seeding. Together, our interns seeded 163 trees, including Southwest White Pine, Piñon Pine, and our very own native Ponderosa Pine!

We're back at it for our June summer adventures—and adventures we had for our first week of BIRDS@Work! ☀️🌲

Last week, our interns kicked off the season with a little bit of everything: A nature walk joined by our Advisory Board member, Leonard Selestewa, tree planting, and helping with work at the garden space at the new Marshall Elementary School.

Thanks to everyone who came out and supported us this past weekend at the Coconino County Master Gardener's Plant Sale! 🌱💚

All of our veggie starts were sown and grown by youth who participate in our School Gardens programming and our BIRDS@Work internship—participating in this sale every year (with the help of some of our youth interns and NAU interns) is such a huge accomplishment!

There were so many friends, smiles, and—of course—plants! We can't wait to see everyone again next year!!

Congratulations to all the Ponderosa High School graduates—and a special congratulations is in order for our BIRDS@Work intern, Isaiah!

Terra BIRDS has partnered closely with PHS since 2010, cultivating school gardens throughout Northern Arizona and helping build the garden space around the PHS campus. This year, we announced a new tradition for Ponderosa's spring graduation: Our first annual graduation award.

The Helen Reeves Merrill Stewardship Award honors a BIRDS@Work intern who has demonstrated exceptional leadership, responsibility, and dedication to environmental stewardship. Named in memory of Helen Reeves Merrill, this award celebrates her lifelong commitment to helping young people grow as thoughtful caretakers of the natural world.

Isaiah has been a BIRDS@Work intern since Spring of 2024 and has participated in every seasonal session since. He will be joining us this summer, as well! He has shown exemplary growth through his participation in BIRDS@Work. He has consistently demonstrated a strong dedication to stewardship, leadership, care for his peers and community, and a deep commitment to personal growth and environmental responsibility. This award, presented by Terra BIRDS, included a cash scholarship intended to support his education at Northern Arizona University.

We are incredibly proud of you, Isaiah! 💚
