Letter to the Editor, Arizona Daily Sun

Friends of Flagstaff’s Future supports a YES vote on the Flagstaff Regional Land Use Plan 2045. This plan is not a minor update — it is a decisive shift to address the two most urgent challenges facing our community: housing attainability and climate change. By prioritizing these recognized emergencies, the plan reflects both the realities residents face today and the responsibility we carry for the future.

The plan takes meaningful action by allowing a wider range of housing types — duplexes, triplexes, fourplexes, and townhomes — in every neighborhood. This will expand more affordable housing options for the people who keep Flagstaff running, including teachers, first responders, healthcare workers, and service employees. All residents of Flagstaff deserve to be able to afford a home.

The plan addresses sprawl by focusing future growth within the Urban Growth Boundary, prioritizing infill within existing neighborhoods, and new housing in central areas and along transit corridors. This approach seeks to create walkable neighborhoods near public transit, improved access to services and jobs while reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

The 2045 Plan supports reducing greenhouse gas emissions in Flagstaff by utilizing renewable energy and innovative technology to power the city’s wastewater treatment plants, providing EV charging stations, and supporting home energy retrofits.

It’s vitally important that Flagstaff have policies in place that encourage the type of development our residents need and want. The 2045 Plan places Flagstaff on a stronger path toward achieving housing attainability, reduced carbon emissions, and vibrant neighborhoods.

F3 urges a YES vote for ratification of the 2045 Plan.
