In 2025, Gear Girls served 51 incredible girls and families. Across 45 outings, girls racked up an epic 923 miles via mountain biking, hiking, snowshoeing, and xc skiing 🚵‍♀️

Above all else, Gear Girls gave back. Participating in 4 different stewardship projects, girls improved 2.5 miles of trail infrastructure and volunteered 120 hours to our community and public lands 🫶

We are deeply grateful for each parent, family, coach, community member, partner, and supporter who make Gear Girls possible. Your trust, time, energy, and encouragement helps create a space where girls can grow into confident leaders, build community, and connect meaningfully with the outdoors. This program exists because of YOU, and we are endlessly thankful 💖

Want to support Gear Girls and help more girls get outside? Donations to Gear Girls directly support programming and are tax deductible. Every contribution helps remove barriers, strengthen our community, and invest in the next generation of outdoor leaders 🙌

During this time of year, it's important to reflect on 2025 and all we have done together. Here are some highlights from Arizona Trail Association: Gear Girls:

🚵‍♀️ Gear Girls' Skills Transfer to New Trails ~ by Makenzie Mabery, Gear Girls Coordinator
In collaboration with the U.S. Forest Service Red Rock Trail Crew, Sedona Mountain Bike Academy, and Flagstaff Lady Shredders, Gear Girls donned their hard hats and contributed to the creation of Sedona's newest trail in the Scherman Mountain area, creating a more sustainable and accessible connection to neighboring trail systems. Working alongside land managers and trail professionals, Gear Girls learned first hand how to break and shape new trail while being introduced to opportunities and possible future career paths in environmental and conservation fields.

While the iconic landscape of Sedona has become a true mountain biking mecca, new trail development is rare and is not something many riders ever experience. It was incredibly meaningful for the girls to play a role in shaping the future of trail use in Northern Arizona, fostering a deeper connection and lifelong love for wild landscapes, and a strong sense of responsibility to care for them.

Gear Girls uses mountain biking, trail work, and snow sports to build confidence, outdoor competence, community, and character in young women grades 4-8 in Flagstaff and northern Arizona. Your donations allow us to inspire the next generation of trail users, stewards, and community members who have strong connections to trails, public lands, and wild places. Surrounded by the glowing lights of Jerome, Clarkdale, and the sprawling Verde Valley, Gear Girls celebrated the end of the fall session this past weekend with a campout at ✨️

Though the rain (and mud) were relentless, girls remained seemingly unphased, positive, and earned camping street cred for weathering the storms with great additudes and showcased sheer ingenuity to stay dry ☔️

Many thanks to coaches, parents, participants, partners, donors, and supporters for making this program possible and getting more girls on the trail 👏

If you drove up to to peep the fall leaves last weekend, you surely saw the bike-centric party happening at the intersection of Snowbowl Road and HWY 180... ✨️

We’re thrilled to highlight one of our incredible Junior Coaches - Rory! 💖

Junior Coaches are young women in grades 7–10 who are ready to take the next step in their Gear Girls journey by learning how to lead, teach, and inspire. Through the Junior Coaches program, participants build confidence and compassion as they practice facilitating lessons, supporting newer riders, and bringing positive energy to every ride ✨️

This model gives girls the opportunity to grow through a full cycle of developing coaching skills → practicing coaching → receiving feedback → refining those skills again. It’s all about learning by doing, and doing it together 🫶

Rory took her role as a Junior Coach and ran (or rather, rode) with it! During last week's ride, she led an incredible lesson on trackstands. Before her session, no one in the group could balance for more than a few seconds. By the end, the whole group was holding their balance for 40 seconds+! 👁👄👁

Her teaching, patience, and encouragement turned what started as wobbles and laughter into steady confidence and celebration. Moments like this capture what Gear Girls is all about: girls lifting each other up, learning together, and growing as leaders both on and off the trail 🚵‍♀️

Arizona Trail in a Day 2025 was a celebration of the 800 miles of scenic wonder that connects us ✨️ About reconnecting with the essence of why we love the Trail, our appreciation for those who care for it, and for the memories we make on it 💫

Gear Girls set off on Passage 33 donning their new
cycling kits, admiring the new rerouted trail girls worked on this past spring! ⚒️
