I was talking to some friends the other night and we were discussing how this type of thing happens to people sometimes. There is a connection, a thread if you will that brings people together that doesn't make any sense at the time. The Universe finds you and makes the connection, well connect when the times is right.
Have you ever had this type of thing happen to you? We would love to hear about it.
About 10 years ago, a woman left me a voicemail.
"Hi, it's Mom. Whatcha doin'? Call me back."
So I called her to let her know she'd dialed the wrong number, and that her daughter wasn't ignoring her. But the man who answered said there was no "mom" there, and that I had misdialed.
I tried the number from my phone log again, but the same guy answered.
A few weeks later, she called again, and I picked up.
I explained what was happening. She recited her daughter's number, and it was nothing like mine, and hers was nothing like the number that showed up on my phone.
So we laughed and hung up.
Then came another call a few weeks later. We started talking and she told me she lived in northern Michigan with her husband. They had five daughters, a bunch of grand and great-grandchildren.
I put her into my contacts as "Not My Mom" and we'd chat every few months and exchanged Christmas cards. She sent me pretty handmade red potholders that hang on our fridge. I sent her Mother's Day flowers.
I learned her foster son was buried in the small town where I live – far from where she lives, with no other connection. I sent her a picture of his grave.
I hadn't heard from her in a while, and thought about her often.
A few weeks ago, her name showed up on a crawl banner on my phone screen.
The next day I found her obituary.
Rest well, Barbara Not My Mom. ❤️
