Senator Jim Risch, a prominent member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, recently shared his insights at the "Building Bridges & Breaking Barriers" event in Washington, focusing his remarks on the critical issue of sanctions and the pathways toward recovery and reconstruction.

Senator Risch addressed the complex issue of sanctions and reconstruction with remarkable clarity. While supporting Syria’s recovery, he emphasized that lifting sanctions is not a "magic wand." He delivered a message: the primary responsibility lies with the Syrian people and the Syrian state to rebuild infrastructure and ensure security to create a viable environment for investment.

Furthermore, he made a definitive statement regarding Syria's international alignment, noting that distancing from Russia is a prerequisite for developing a strong partnership with the United States. 🇺🇸🇸🇾

On the first day of our conference, “Building Bridges & Breaking Barriers,” we were honored to host Rep. Joe Wilson, Republican Congressman from South Carolina.

Rep. Wilson shared reflections from his recent visit to Damascus, including entering the Presidential Palace and meeting with President Ahmad Al-Sharaa. His remarks highlighted a significant moment in the evolving U.S.-Syria relationship and the importance of continued dialogue, stability, and mutual cooperation.

We are grateful for his participation and for the opportunity to engage in meaningful conversations on Syria’s future and U.S.-Syria relations. 🇺🇸🇸🇾

📣 Syria's economy cannot recover at the speed it needs to if businesses, investors, and institutions still face layers of uncertainty and operational barriers. Real recovery requires a more functional environment — one that allows capital, talent, and enterprise to move with greater clarity and confidence.
That's a conversation we're having at the SAAPP|SAC 2026 Advocacy Conference — April 24 on Capitol Hill.

Panel I: Post-Sanctions Syria – Rebuilding the Economy from the Ground Up - 10:00AM-11:30AM

Joining us:
🔹 Alaa Kamnaksh — Co-Founder & Chief Scientist, Zenobia Advisory Group
🔹 Steve Lutis — VP & Deputy Head of Middle East, Central Asia & Türkiye, U.S. Chamber of Commerce
🔹 Natasha Hall — Associate Fellow, Middle East & North Africa Program, Chatham House
🔹 Aysha Chowdhry — Senior Advisor, The Asia Group

What does it actually take to unlock meaningful economic momentum in Syria? This panel goes there.
