World Vision trucks with water, blankets and diapers arrives in Tome. Relief workers go onto Minami Sanriku, where 9,600 people are displaced in 40 shelters, to distribute these items.

On Friday, March 11, an 8.9-magnitude earthquake, the largest in the country's history, hit near the northeast coast of Japan triggering a tsunami warning for at east 50 countries and territories in the region.

Roads and rail, power and ports have been crippled across much of Japan's northeast and estimates of the cost of the multiple disasters have leapt to as much as $170 billion.

Following the quake and tsunami, World Vision U.S. in collaboration with World Vision Japan deployed an assessment team to the hardest hit areas in Japan to better determine the needs of those affected. In coordination with local government and partnering organizations, World Vision is currently organizing distributions of emergency relief items such as: water, blankets, and diapers to support approximately 6,000 people in the city of Tome, near Sendai.
