Gary will share his experience living through serious illness, including Neuro-Behçet’s, finding the right care, learning to advocate for himself, navigating Behçet’s as a male patient, and the emotional impact illness can have on your identity and sense of self.

We’ll talk about the pieces of chronic illness that can be harder to see: grief, isolation, changing relationships with yourself, learning to separate your identity from being a patient, and figuring out what it means to move forward when your health and life begin to change.

Over 49 years, many of you have come to know ABDA through a support resource like our free literature kits, educational webinars, Community Connection events, awareness walks, social media posts, research opportunities, or maybe even a conversation with our team.

But there is much more happening behind the scenes.

ABDA is a small organization with a larger mission: to support, educate, and empower the Behçet’s community while advocating for better research, diagnostics, and treatment.

Today, that mission touches nearly every part of the patient experience.

Over the next several weeks, we want to do something a little different.

Rather than beginning with a traditional fundraising ask, we want to begin by bringing you behind the scenes.

We’ll share more about who ABDA is today, what we’re working on, where we believe the organization can go next, and the many ways our community can help us continue building.

We’re calling this campaign Help Us Open the Next Door.
