🚨 SCAM WARNING: Jury Duty Phone Scam Circulating in NC 🚨

🚓 We’re seeing an increase in reports of scammers posing as local law enforcement, claiming you missed jury duty and must act immediately.

📞 These calls can sound VERY real — they may use your name, address, legal language, and even background noise to seem legitimate.

⚠️ Some callers will try to pressure you by saying there’s a “gag order” and instruct you not to contact anyone while they walk you through what to do next.

💳 In many cases, the situation escalates to payment demands — including requests to send money, scan barcodes, or go to stores like Walmart to complete a transaction.

🚫 Know this: Law enforcement will NEVER call you demanding payment, placing you under a gag order, or requiring immediate action over the phone.

⚠️ We’ve also received reports of a separate scam where someone pretends to be a parent accusing you of inappropriate online contact and demanding money to avoid charges.

📱 If you receive a suspicious call, hang up immediately and contact your local sheriff’s office directly:
• Cumberland County: 910-323-1500
• Hoke County: 910-875-5111
• Harnett County: 910-893-9111

🚨 Protect yourself: Never send money or share personal information with unknown callers — no matter how urgent it sounds.

🚨 Consumer Protection Alert: Active Scams in Fayetteville & Cumberland County (April 2026) 🚨

The Greater Fayetteville Chamber Consumer Protection Division is warning residents and businesses about several scams currently circulating in our area:

• Fake NC DMV Texts – Messages claiming you owe traffic tickets, tolls, or “final notice” fees. These often include harmful links or QR codes. The N.C. DMV will not request payment this way.
• Fake County “Notice of Default” Texts – Similar messages claiming unpaid fines or legal action. These are not legitimate.
• Imposter Event Vendor Scams – Scammers are targeting vendors for local events (including Hoke Fest 2026) using fake emails to collect payments.
• Fake Invoice Scam – Fraudulent invoices are being sent using official-looking Cumberland County letterheads, including a fake “Department of Planning and Inspections.”
• Impersonation Calls – Scammers are spoofing phone numbers to appear as local law enforcement or utility companies.

✅ Protect Yourself:

Always verify before you pay or respond. The Consumer Protection Division urges residents and businesses to ONLY work with VERIFIED contacts and vendors.

When in doubt, contact the organization directly using official, trusted information.

If you believe you’ve been targeted, report it to local authorities.
