Western Mountain Woodturners Association

Western Mountain Woodturners Association Welcome to the home of the Western Mountain Woodturners. We are a group of woodturning enthusiasts w

We will post here about our meetings as soon as we can get back together. Our club started in May of 2004 when 11 turners got together in the Dirigo High School woodshop for the first time. We have just passed our 7th year anniversary and in the time since the clubs inception we have been able to buy a new Powermatic 3520a lathe, Oneway Stronghold chuck and Oneway Wolverine sharpening system for the school.

Thank you to everyone who came to Wednesday night's meeting and many thanks to Doug Timberlake who presented a great demonstration of embellishing techniques that included carving, burning and painting. When I say painting I don't mean a single color but multiple dry brushed layers (17!!) consisting of varied shades over solid black. He also displayed his arsenal of carving and burning tips, many of the latter he made himself. He certainly held everyone's attention!

We had our first and very successful wood auction! Thanks to everyone who contributed wood and, of course, to those who bought the raffle tickets!

Last but certainly not least, my gratitude goes to the remaining officers who immediately agreed to join AAW so that we can obtain insurance for the club and to the others who offered or who are already members. You made that process easy and I thank you.

Our next meeting will be Wednesday, November 12 at 6pm in the woodshop of Mt Blue High School, 19 Seamon Rd., Door 19, Farmington, Maine. Mike Chase will be demonstrating an ornament so we can all start getting ready for Christmas. We will again try a wood auction. See you then!

Join us at the next meeting of Western Mountain Woodturners next Wednesday, October 8th at 6pm in the woodshop of Mt. Blue High School, 129 Seamon Rd., Door 19, Farmington, Maine.
This month's demonstrator will be our own Doug Timberlake who will show us carving and burning. Doug recently attended a week long class with Graeme Priddle and Melissa Engler where he learned embellishing techniques and has also taken classes with Jacques Vesery where he learned surface burning and painting.

We will try a wood raffle at this meeting. If you would like to donate a piece of wood to the cause, just bring it along.

And please bring things for Show and Tell! While we all love to see your masterpiece, we all learn from the things that didn't work and things that you might do differently on a second try.

See you on October 8th!

Many thanks to everyone who came to last night’s meeting and who brought in so much of their work from over the summer. I believe it was the largest Show and Tell collection that I have seen in our club for a very long time! Keep on turning!
