A beautiful hike in the mountains above Bountiful turned into a search and rescue mission Tuesday night.

At approximately 9 p.m. Aug. 25, Davis County Sheriff’s Search and Rescue was called to help locate a hiker who had lost the trail and become stuck in the mountains. The hiker was able to call family members, who then contacted 911 for help.

Search and rescue members used ATVs to travel toward the top of the mountain but eventually had to leave the machines behind and hike another two miles before locating the hiker.

The hiker was cold and hungry but able to walk back to the ATVs and ride down the mountain with the team.

As you head into the mountains, be prepared. Pack plenty of food and water, dress for changing weather conditions and make sure someone knows where you're going. A little preparation can make a big difference when an unexpected situation occurs.

This Memorial Day, the Davis County Sheriff’s Search and Rescue Team said goodbye to one of our own.

Jason Chapman, affectionately known as “Chappy,” passed away this weekend after a courageous battle with cancer. For more than two decades, Chappy served as a dedicated member of our Search and Rescue Team, answering the call whenever help was needed.

Beyond his service, Chappy was a devoted husband, father, mentor, and friend. He was quick with a joke, always willing to share his knowledge, and took pride in helping new team members develop the skills needed to succeed in emergency situations. If there was a piece of gear that might be useful, Chappy probably had it with him. He believed in being prepared for anything.

An avid sportsman, snowmobiler, and lover of anything fast, Chappy lived life to the fullest and never shied away from adventure.

Today, members of our Search and Rescue Team honored Chappy with a hike to Flag Rock, reflecting on the countless memories, lessons, and laughs he shared with us over the years.

Thank you for your service, your friendship, and the example you set for all of us.

We’ll miss you, buddy.

On May 17, 2026, Davis County Sheriff’s Search and Rescue responded to Adams Canyon after a hiker suffered a fall near the upper waterfall. First responders assessed the patient for a lower leg injury before safely transporting them down the canyon for additional medical treatment.

As warmer weather brings more people to Utah’s trails, we encourage hikers to stay safe in the mountains by planning ahead, wearing proper footwear, carrying water, and using caution on steep or wet terrain. If you find yourself in danger or need assistance, don’t hesitate to call for help.

Members of the Davis County Sheriff’s Office Search and Rescue team recently trained in Farmington Canyon, practicing the rapid setup of rope systems used to haul injured individuals off steep terrain and back to safety.

Regular training helps ensure the team can respond quickly and effectively when someone needs help in the backcountry. While rescuers hope they’re never needed, they stay ready for the call.

As warmer weather brings more people outdoors, remember to plan ahead, stay aware of your surroundings and know your limits. If you find yourself in trouble, don’t hesitate to call for help.
