It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of former Local 27 President and Business Manager Thomas DeBartolo, a towering figure in New Jersey's labor movement, who left us at the age of 62.
Tom was more than a leader- he was a brother, a friend, and an unrelenting champion for working families. Beginning his journey in 1985 as an apprentice with Local 27 Sheet Metal Workers, Tom rose through the ranks with unwavering dedication: from foreman in the field to organizer, business agent, and most recently, our esteemed President and Business Manager.
His influence extended far beyond Local 27. Tom served as President of the Local Building Trades, President of the Metropolitan Association, and General Executive Vice President of our SMART International Union. Through every role, he embodied the spirit of solidarity, fighting tirelessly for fair wages, safe conditions, and the dignity of every worker.
Tom's friendship, brotherhood, and fierce commitment to our union will be deeply missed. His legacy lives on in the lives he touched, the battles he won, and the movement he strengthened.
While his professional life was one of leadership and advocacy, his personal life was filled with love. He married his beloved wife, Suzanne, on October 17, 1998. Over the past 27 years they built a life filled with laughter, love, family, and great friends. He cherished his time with his children Olivia and Tyler, his daughter-in-law Caitlin, grandchildren Peyton and Knox, and his mother-in-law Gail.
Rest in power, Tom. The fight continues in your honor.
