The Fargo Fire Department encourages citizens to participate in Fire Prevention Week from October 4-10. This year’s campaign, “Charge into Fire Safety. Safe Charging Is a Superpower,” is part of a nationwide effort to educate the public about simple actions they can take to safely use and charge devices powered by lithium-ion batteries. More information about the campaign can be found at www.firepreventionweek.org.

Many devices used in our daily lives, including phones, tablets, laptops, tools, toys, e-bikes and scooters, rely on rechargeable lithium-ion batteries. These batteries store a significant amount of energy in a small space. If a battery is damaged or improperly charged, it can overheat, catch fire or even explode. Following safe charging practices can help reduce the risk of battery-related fires in the home.

The Fargo Fire Department wants to share these key tips and guidelines.
• Use the cord and charger that came with your device or one approved by the manufacturer. Using the wrong charger can damage the battery and increase the risk of fire.
• Charge devices on a table, desk, or other hard, flat surface. Do not charge them on beds, couches, or under pillows. Devices and chargers produce heat during normal charging. Soft surfaces can trap heat and block airflow, which can cause the battery to overheat.
• Stop using your device if it feels very hot, starts to swell, is smoking, or has a strange smell. These are warning signs that the battery may be damaged or failing.
• Unplug your device when it is fully charged. Do not leave it plugged in longer than needed. Leaving a device plugged in too long can increase heat and stress on the battery.
• Charge larger items like e-bikes, scooters, and power tools outside and away from exits. These batteries are larger and store more energy. If they fail, fires can grow quickly and spread.

Taking a few simple precautions each time a device is charged can help reduce the risk of battery-related fires and keep homes and families safer. Residents are encouraged to learn more and share Fire Prevention Week resources with family, friends and neighbors at www.firepreventionweek.org.

Thanks to Fargo voters who approved the Public Safety Sales Tax in November 2024, Fargo residents will not only have eight additional police officers protecting our community, but the City of Fargo was also able to balance its 2027 budget AND begin replenishing financial reserves that were spent by previous Commissions.

We look forward to continuing to work collaboratively with the The City of Fargo - Government to ensure our fire and police departments are staffed to meet national standards and provide the safe, effective public services our community deserves.

The $148.3 million budget includes funding for additional officers. In separate vote, city commissioners delays vote on commercial redevelopment tax incentive.

Great job by our firefighters as well as FPD officers (gotta give credit where credit is due) on making sure all residents got out safe.

With heavy fire conditions during prime sleeping hours, this could have easily been tragic if not for the teamwork of your public safety crews!

Make City Hall Care About YOUR Neighborhood 🧑‍🚒

Fargo firefighters work in every single neighborhood, and we know the difference between being heard and being told to "know our place. " Right now, citywide campaigns require serious money, meaning city hall only listens to a powerful few. A ward system changes that. It breaks the city into smaller districts so a teacher, a nurse, or a retired firefighter can afford to run and knock on every door. It ensures every neighborhood gets a council member who actually lives there and answers to you.

Not voting IS NOT an option, but IS a vote for Fargo to not be represented equally in all parts of the city.

Vote YES for Wards on Oct. 6th.
