Nature gives us so much—let’s protect it in return.

The 7 Principles of Leave No Trace help us explore responsibly, minimize our impact, and preserve the outdoors for future generations:

1️⃣ Plan Ahead and Prepare
Research the area you’re visiting: know the weather, terrain, regulations, and potential hazards. Planning helps prevent accidents, protects natural areas, and ensures you’re packing what you really need.

2️⃣ Travel and Camp on Durable Surfaces
Stick to established trails and campsites to avoid damaging fragile ecosystems. Camp at least 200 feet away from lakes and streams to protect water sources. Avoid trampling vegetation.

3️⃣ Dispose of Waste Properly
“Pack it in, pack it out.” This means everything—trash, leftover food, and even biodegradable items like orange peels or sunflower shells. Use bathroom facilities when possible or dig a cathole 6-8 inches deep and 200 feet from water sources to bury human waste.

4️⃣ Leave What You Find
Leave rocks, plants, cultural artifacts, and other natural treasures where you find them. Avoid building structures, carving into trees, or rearranging the landscape. Teach kids to take photos instead of souvenirs—let nature stay natural.

5️⃣ Minimize Campfire Impact
Fires can cause long-term damage if not managed properly. Use a lightweight stove for cooking and enjoy a fire only where allowed and in established fire rings. Always burn small sticks that can be broken by hand, and make sure the fire is dead out before leaving.

6️⃣ Respect Wildlife
Observe wild animals from a distance—never follow, approach, or feed them. Feeding wildlife can harm their health, alter natural behaviors, and put both people and animals at risk. Store food securely to avoid unwanted visitors!

7️⃣ Be Considerate of Other Visitors
Everyone enjoys nature in different ways. Keep noise levels down, yield to others on trails, and respect group sizes and quiet hours in camping areas.

Let’s leave nature better than we found it.

What’s one principle your family focuses on when you’re out exploring?

Spending just 20 minutes outside can have a powerful impact on your mood. Whether it’s stepping outside for a short walk, sitting in a park, or just breathing in the fresh air, those brief moments in nature can work wonders.

Research has shown that being outside helps reduce stress, boost endorphins, and improve overall mental well-being. Exposure to natural light helps regulate your circadian rhythm, which in turn can enhance your sleep and energy levels.

Even if it’s just for a short break, getting outdoors can leave you feeling refreshed, more focused, and in a better mood for the rest of the day.

So, next time you’re feeling overwhelmed or down, try taking 20 minutes to step outside—it might be the simple reset you need!

At Freeing the Outdoors, we believe that the outdoors should be accessible to everyone.

To advocate for the need to make outdoor spaces more accessible to everyone and to demonstrate the importance of representation in outdoor spaces, we highlight accounts who support our mission of inclusive outdoor spaces.

This week we are featuring Jodie St. Clair and her amazing worldschooling family at .

Jodie is an above-the-knee amputee and cancer survivor who has traveled the world with her family since 2022. She hopes to empower other families and people with mobility disabilities to travel more, their way.

Jodie loves spending time outside and suggests that families who are new to the outdoors should start small. She encourages families to find parks and outdoor spaces near their home and to start with short outings.

And as much as Jodie loves to spend time in nature, she has found that there are barriers people can face when accessing outdoor spaces such as equipment and support. Jodie has learned that often communities don’t want to make their spaces more accessible because there is a general feeling that paths or ramps take the “wildness” out of the space. Jodie notes that these types of comments make it feel like outdoor spaces are better if they are hard to access. She has found that while “options open up with the right equipment, mobility beyond daily basics is considered a luxury.”

This is why Jodie believes that it is important for individuals to see themselves represented in the outdoor online space. She has found that oftentimes people don’t realize what they are capable of until they see someone else doing it. “I’ll see another amputee or someone with a mobility impairment ski, ride a bike, or surf and it hadn’t crossed my mind that it would be a possibility for me. It’s easy to put ourselves in a box because we haven’t seen an example.”

And that is exactly what Jodie is – an amazing example of all that can be done in nature when those spaces are made accessible to everyone.

At Freeing the Outdoors, we believe that the outdoors should be accessible to everyone regardless of economic status, physical ability, or geographical location.

To advocate for the need to make outdoor spaces more accessible to everyone and to demonstrate the importance of representation in outdoor spaces, we highlight accounts whose stories are inspiring and support our mission of inclusive outdoor spaces.

This week we are featuring Kristin and her amazing family at .

Kristin is a teacher and mom of two young daughters. Her family loves to spend time outside whether they are exploring new trails, playing in the park, or simply enjoying nature’s beauty, they cherish their family adventures. “Being outside brings us closer together, allowing us to slow down, connect, and make lasting memories.”

Kristin has found that spending time outdoors has been incredibly rewarding for our family. “It gives us uninterrupted moments together, away from screens and daily distractions, where we can truly be present with one another.”

Kristin advises that if you are just beginning your journey of spending more time outdoors - start simple! Look for local parks, nature trails, or even green spaces in your community where you can explore at your own pace. She advises that “the most important thing is to make it enjoyable and stress-free, so it becomes a habit that everyone looks forward to!”

Kristin also believes that representation in the outdoor space matters because nature is for everyone! “When individuals and families see people who look like them enjoying the outdoors, it reinforces that they belong in those spaces, too. It helps break down barriers, encourages more people to step outside, and fosters a greater sense of connection to nature.”

We at Freeing the Outdoors couldn’t agree more with Kristin when she said, “Everyone deserves to feel welcome and inspired to explore the beauty of the natural world.”

Be sure to follow along on all of Kristin’s family’s inspiring outdoor adventures at .

Nature has the power to heal, restore, and inspire.

At Freeing the Outdoors, we’are committed to making the beauty of the great outdoors accessible to everyone—no matter their economic status, physical abilities, or location.

Our Freeing the Trails initiative will break down barriers by placing all-terrain wheelchairs in state parks, empowering individuals who use wheelchairs to be able to explore hiking trails and natural spaces that were once out of reach.

Together, we’re ensuring that everyone in our community can experience the freedom and joy of nature.

With all that is going on in the world right now, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed by stress, sadness, and feelings of uneasiness.

Sometimes, the most powerful remedy is stepping outside.

Nature has an incredible way of soothing our minds and lifting our spirits. The gentle rustling of leaves, the warmth of the sun, the sound of birds singing — these small moments can ground us and help us breathe a little easier. Studies show that spending time in nature can lower cortisol levels (the stress hormone), reduce anxiety, and even improve mood and focus.

When the world feels heavy, consider taking a walk through the woods, sitting by a stream, or simply standing barefoot on the grass. You don’t need to venture far or stay long; even a few minutes outside can make a difference. The fresh air, open skies, and calming presence of trees remind us that we are part of something bigger, offering a natural reset for our minds and bodies.

So, if you are feeling the weight of the world on your shoulders right now, consider giving yourself the gift of time outside. Nature is always there, ready to heal, uplift, and inspire — one step at a time.

At Freeing the Outdoors, we believe the outdoors should be accessible to everyone regardless of economic status, physical ability, or geographical location. Our mission is to break down barriers and open doors to the beauty and benefits of nature for everyone.

To advocate for the need to make outdoor spaces more accessible to everyone and to demonstrate the importance of representation in outdoor spaces, we highlight accounts whose stories are inspiring and support our mission of inclusive outdoor spaces.

This week we are featuring Gwyn and Ami, the couple behind the account .

Gwyn and Ami live in Spokane, Washington and have been together for 10 years, married for 3 years, and have been hiking and adventuring together for that entire time!

Gwyn and Ami prioritize getting outside daily. On weekends they try to go on hikes together and during the week they love daily neighborhood walks. They have found that their walks almost always help improve their moods.

Gwyn and Ami suggest if you are new to the outdoors, start by exploring your local parks and green spaces. “Starting local is not only a great way to explore ‘your own backyard’ but it’s not too far from home for when you need a rest afterward. Bonus tip: call your local tourism board and ask for outdoor recreation ideas and hiking trail recommendations!”

Gwyn and Ami recognize that outdoor recreation seems to focus very much on able bodied folks, which they feel is a shame. They believe that actively engaging community members and advocacy groups to speak up about improved accessibility is super important.

Gwyn and Ami also believe it is important for all people to feel represented in the outdoors. As Ami says, “We all like feeling like we belong!” They believe that finding kinship in others with similar interests, similar abilities, and similar backgrounds and beliefs helps to foster an environment where people develop enthusiasm for an activity.

As a q***r couple, Gwyn and Ami hope to “show up” authentically online and in the outdoors with the goal of helping others feel welcome and safe! Follow along on their amazing and inspiring outdoors adventures at .
