Embracing perspectives is not only supportive of neurodivergent needs but ALL needs. We operate from the lens that variances add value, we are after all the Washington Interdisciplinary Neurodiversity Group. While we advocate for, educate about, share resources and supports for and hope to promote community building for neurodivergent folks, everyone is supported when small actions are made to embrace perspectives - time is taken to invest in understanding and trusting the needs of others.

Therapists who want to support autistic individuals should actively engage with and honor the lived experiences of the autistic community. 💛 To assume what someone needs or wants based on ableist standards is not support. To assume an individual or group of people or a community "should" do, be, feel, or think in uniform ways negates the very reason why so many people seek support, regardless of neurotype. Imagine if therapists sought out opportunities to learn diverse perspectives instead.
❓In what ways do you seek opportunities to engage with and respect the lived experiences of the autistic community?

Meet our Vice President, Julia.
Julia is a late-identified Autistic psychotherapist and founder of Rising Recovery and Psychotherapy in Alexandria, VA, where she provides neurodiversity-affirming psychotherapy to individuals, couples and families, trauma-focused interventions, parent coaching and substance use recovery coaching, as well as professional consultation for those seeking to understand their clients through the lens of the Neurodiversity Paradigm. Julia lives by the conviction that everyone deserves the opportunity for growth, healing and authenticity – no matter the obstacles, and regardless of how society has perceived them. As a founding member of WING, Julia hopes to expand upon her passion for helping people to better understand and trust themselves and feel empowered in their lives. Through advocacy, education and support, she hopes to build a better, more inclusive environment for coming generations that embraces the value and contributions of the vibrant array of neurotypes that exist in the world.

The name WING is inspired by a symbol important in the journey of Jennifer Glacel in understanding her Autistic nervous system and her own needs.
"The Flightless Cormorant is a bird found only in the Galapagos. It is related to the Cormorant, a bird found in many places, that is an excellent swimmer partly due to its feathers - which are not waterproof. This means that it needs to sit in the sun and dry its wings after swimming for food, but before being able to fly. For many years I’ve held this bird as an important symbol for me – to remember to rest. Meeting the Flightless Cormorant has created an important shift in me. The Flightless Cormorant still spreads its wings and dries and rests in the sun after swimming, but not in order to fly, but rather just because it feels good. The Flightless Cormorant has found an environment that meets its needs. It no longer has to meet the needs of its environment in order to survive. I think of the Flightless Cormorant in the Galapagos when I think of the community we could create and the people who would be a part of it."

Today, on Father's Day, we honor all the forms of fatherhood and recognize the profound joys and complex challenges it brings. From the resilience of trans dads to the quiet strength of bonus dads, from the celebration of dog dads to the courage of those in chosen or inherited roles, this day means something different to each of us. We see you—those navigating the impacts of societal expectations, those finding their way through childhood trauma, grief or parenting neurodivergence, and everyone in between.

Father's Day isn't just a celebration; it's an opportunity to reflect on the different pathways of mothering, acknowledging that choice is not always afforded and the identity of 'dad' is both deeply personal and infinitely varied. 💗

We will embrace all these narratives, offering support and understanding to everyone for whom this day brings mixed emotions. Share this post to honor every mom in your life, in all their diversity.
