Happy Cinema Sunday! This week's scene was a hard one to cut down to just 20 seconds but, if you can identify it, by all means go and watch the whole scene (or the whole film for that matter!) It perfectly describes love at its purest and most simple, without the over-the-top "hearts and flowers" of love songs and romance novels!

This week's Flashback Friday is to rehearsals for "Wild Things," a children's ballet composed by Resident Artist John Nettles, which Cinballera Co-Founder Rebekah Brannan choreographed for our June 2025 show "A Dream Before Summer."

Johnny (Connor Hollman), a high-spirited and imaginative little boy, has traveled across a mystic ocean to a magical island, where he encounters a group of ferocious monsters, led by their queen (Rebekah Brannan) and her cavalier.

This video was edited together from a couple different days but, due to scheduling conflicts, the number was not performed by the full cast at either session. In the finished show, there were six monsters, and the Monster Queen was partnered by a Monster Cavalier, played by Gian Carlo Vargas.

The monsters featured are Aurora Severn Trujillo, Holyn Brandt, Kaylei Hayward, Jaqueline Brasilio Besvoglio, Marissa Milan, and Soyo Ijima.

Happy Throwback Thursday! We're taking you back to our summer show of 2025, Giacomo Puccini's "Madama Butterfly"!

American Naval officer B. F. Pinkerton married Japanese geisha Butterfly (Cinballera Founder Tiffany Brannan) and sailed away soon after, promising to return. Three years pass, and Butterfly is still waiting patiently, watching the horizon endlessly for his ship. However, her money is running low and her faithful servant, Suzuki (Cinballera Co-Founder Rebekah Brannan), worries that they will have nothing on which to live if he doesn't return soon. Butterfly insists that he will return, chiding Suzuki for her disbelief. With unwavering faith, she describes the beautiful day when he will arrive and swears she will continue to wait.

Joseph Valent on piano, James Brannan on percussion. Video by Bryan Dahl Videography and Photography.

We'll be bringing you more Puccini with our summer show this year, the short but dazzling "Il Tabarro"! One show only, July 19th, at the California Center for the Arts, Escondido! Buy tickets now: https://artcenter.org/event/iltabarro/.

Happy Memorial Day! ✈️⚓️🪂

In our November 2025 show "Week-end at the Grand Hotel," which we were fortunate enough to perform on Veteran's Day weekend, was a true tribute to veterans, since three out of the six characters featured were veterans.

One of the most poignant scenes in the show was a dance sequence which we dubbed the "Nightmare Ballet." In it, Captain Jimmy Hollis (Robert Steven Mack), a mute, shell-shocked World War II pilot, suffers a PTSD attack, reliving two of his most tramautic experiences in combat. The first takes him to a time when he was shot down behind enemy lines and encountered three drunken N***s exiting a tavern and was forced to kill one of them in order to escape. The second is the incident which left him with a serious injury and shock-induced muteness. His co-pilot was shot and killed on a mission while he watched, powerless to help, and a piece of shrapnel from the shot that killed him lodged near Jimmy's heart.

The offstage N**i voices were provided by the other three male cast members, John Nettles, Shawn Taylor, and Bryan Christian Dahl. Dr. Joseph Valent on piano. Video by Greg Olive.

Welcome to our new series, "Musical Match Monday"! To break up Meme Mondays a little, every few weeks, we'll be pointing out opera excerpts that sound like other works.

Whether these are accidental similarities or out-and-out plagiarism, we'll find them and share them with you!

While you're in the Puccini mood, don't forget to buy your tickets for "Il Tabarro," one show only, July 19th, at the California Center for the Arts Escondido (CCAE)!

Happy Cinema Sunday! In honor of tomorrow's holiday, we had to share a clip from a Civil War film, since, as you may or may not know, Memorial Day started as a day to commemorate veterans of the Civil War specifically.

To give you a hint, the soldier in this clip, although he's wearing a Union uniform, is actually a Southerner in disguise!
