Hey everyone,
I am going to be talking about Spiritual Warfare and what it is all about over the next few posts. 2 Timothy 3:16-17. All Scripture is God -breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness,17 so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.
All scripture (every word of it) is inspired by God and is useful (but only if you read it!! And not just read it to check your box on your reading plan for the day, but read it to understand it because you will need it.) To teach us what truth is and to show us what is wrong in our lives. (If we let Him, God will shine the light of His Word into our deepest, darkest places where our sin hides.) It corrects us when we are wrong and teaches us to walk in what is right. God uses it to prepare and equip His people to do every good work!
We are at war! But who are we fighting? Let's look at who we are not fighting first. Ephesians 6:12 tells us this: For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. Often we can feel like we are being attacked, shunned, insulted, or ignored, or maybe even all of the above, by the people we touch and by whom we are touched in our jobs, church families, even families at home. These are the times we feel like we are at war and we are, but not with the person causing the offense, with the flesh and blood right in front of us. It feels like a personal attack and it is but your enemy is not flesh and blood. It is not the people hurling insults or stabbing you in the back. We are at war with satan and must train ourselves to act wisely and to discern who the real enemy is so our heart stays pure. So who is our enemy?
In Ephesians 6:12, Paul talks about the “spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places”. The words 'spiritual hosts' lets us know that these are not physical beings, in other words they don't have bodies like you and I, and that this is not a single entity but is an army of spiritual beings arrayed against mankind with particular focus on those of us who know and are known by God through salvation in Jesus. If you have read about the birth of Jesus you will remember Luke 2:13-14 describes 'a heavenly host (aka angels armies) appeared praising God'. We understand a host to be an unimaginable number. So as there are angel armies that serve the Lord, there are also fallen angel armies (aka hordes of demons) who serve satan. Paul tells us there are rulers, authorities, and cosmic powers. This imagery helps us to understand both the power of our spiritual enemies and the need to put on the whole armor of God(verse 11). We will talk more about this later.
Paul says that the “spiritual hosts of wickedness” live and function in the 'heavenly places'. The heavenly places Paul speaks of is not the heaven where God lives. Instead it refers to a spiritual dimension that coexists with the physical world that we live in. In this dimension, spiritual hosts of wickedness (aka demon armies) influence believers and attempt to carry out their evil plans to steal, kill and destroy. These evil spirits wage war on our thoughts, emotions, and wills. The “heavenly places” therefore are battlegrounds where believers and our spiritual enemies.
It is of ultimate importance for believers to understand both who and what we fight, as well as the schemes of these spiritual hosts of wickedness. These spirits have not broken away or changed their allegiance. They are still evil, organized and have a strategy, operating under a definite system of authority with satan as their supreme commaTheir actions are not random but are directed against God and His people. Satan hates God therefore, 9he hates those who bear God's image. Their goal is to draw us away from Christ and His righteousness, however they can't!! John 10:28-30 This is Jesus speaking, "I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; no one will sn**ch them out of my hand.29 My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all; no one can sn**ch them out of my Father’s hand.30 I and the Father are one.” I don't know if all of Satan's minions (my word, not found in scripture) are aware that they are already defeated and there is nothing they can do to change that. But whatever they are aware of they still fight to defeat us. I wonder accmplush this these hosts use deception, temptation, manipulation, and many other tactics. The truth is that they only want corruption and destruction. As Jesus said, “The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy” (John 10:10, ESV). Knowing this, we should “take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand firm” (Ephesians 6:13, ESV).
The call to “stand against the schemes of the devil" in verse 11 gives us insight into what they do. The word schemes is defined as clever, deceitful, and systematic plans of which we know the end goal... to derail our faith.
These evil spirits are adept at crafting schemes to lead believers into spiritual or moral destruction. They do this by stirring up doubt (The serpents oldest trick: He said to Eve, 'Did God really say you would surely die?...') They also excel in causing despair (so we will give up and in doing so open the door for satan to get a stronghold. They promote false teachings to pull us away from the Truth of God, whereby causing our minds to be filled with confusion and chaos. They entice us into immorality through p**n, etc including entertainment we have chosen to call normal is filled with images and storylines that create lustful thoughts and addictions to them. They will trap us in damaging attitudes (thinking we are better than others whether on an economic plane, a materialistic plane or a spiritual plane) and when we adopt these attitudes as our own then our actions naturally follow. Each evil spirit personalizes his tactics to our weaknesses. Which is why we must remain alert and ready to call on God’s strength and protection and stand our ground.
God will not leave us hanging! Our weapon is His Word and there are verses for every circumstance. “No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation he will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it” (1 Corinthians 10:13, ESV). Our glorious God “is able to keep you from stumbling” (Jude 1:24).
Spiritual warfare is an ongoing truth in our lives. But we must not be discouraged. If we put on the armor of God and persist in faith, prayer, and righteousness, we can overcome the spiritual hosts of wickedness. Not through our strength, but through God’s. “With Your help I can advance against a troop; with my God I can scale a wall” (2 Samuel 22:30). Think about David and Goliath. As the song says, "It only took a single stone to drop a Philistine." God fights for us. Exodus 14:14 "The Lord will fight for you; you need only to be still."

Hey everyone,
I am back with another verse for us to look at and break down so we can understand each incredible layer of it. It is Isaiah 57:15 For thus says the One who is high and lifted up, who inhabits eternity, whose name is Holy: “I dwell in the high and holy place, and also with him who is of a contrite and lowly spirit, to revive the spirit of the lowly, and to revive the heart of the contrite. To begin with, Isaiah tells us this is God speaking to us but he uses specific names for Himself that are explanations of who He is. These are names God chose to use in this passage because he wanted to be sure that we understood exactly who He was and where He was going with this. When we talk about different things about God it helps us understand more deeply if we understand the part of God's character He is relating to us from. So the verse begins, (my paraphrase), This is what God says, I AM the high and holy one. What exactly is he saying here? You might presume that he is talking about heaven where He resides. Literally, the verse says that He is high and lifted up. That phrase always reminds me of a song we sang in church when I was in high school. The song says, "He is high and lifted up and His train fills the temple, the angels cry, Holy, Holy is the Lord." That is taken from another verse in Isaiah chapter 6 verse 1. It is Isaiah's vision of God's throne room in heaven where he sits on a throne in the air and his dazzling white robes flow down into the temple while Seraphim are above him crying Holy, Holy, Holy. What a glorious picture of God in his home, his throne room. He is high on an exalted throne showing his rule and reign over all things, His omnipotence. Omnipotence means 'all powerful' or 'having all power' and includes both God's strength, that far surpasses the strongest human strength and makes nothing impossible for Him, Luke 1:37, and His authority over everything. This is because He created everything and He can eliminate or create at will. "The Lord gave, and the Lord has taken away; blessed be the name of the Lord" (Job 1:21) Our verse says God is the One who is high and holy. Notice the One is capitalized making it a name for God. What does that tell us about Him? He is the One and only True God. He is the One and only who is worthy of being exalted high above all else. Something else is interesting here. Satan is a deceiver and his main desire is to be god. So he takes godly things like where and how God is worshipped and twists and perverts it until it is ungodly. The pagan altars to false gods in the Old Testament were called high places because they were set up on hills or mountains as high as they could be. These false gods are just Satan in another form and he wants to be worshipped as God is, thus the high places for the altars. Just one more sad way to try to imitate God.
As we continue in our verse we know that the next part is important because God repeats it. He is not only high but he is holy and the next sentence take it a step farther and says his name is Holy. Notice that Holy is capitalized which says that rather than just meaning He has a holy name it is saying that Holy is His name. Remember that names in Scripture are important because they say something about the person. That's why God changed the names of men because their character and future changed so their old name no longer fit the man. God's character is Holy, in fact that is who He is at the very core. Everything else He is is connected to His holiness. It must be because His holiness never fluctuates in strength or conviction. He never wavers trying to decide what holiness looks like on any given day because He is immutable... unchanging, He is the same today as He was when He appeared to Moses in the burning bush and will still be the same at the end when he has satan thrown into the lake of fire. Hebrews 13:8. The next thing our verse tells us about our God is that He lives in eternity. You see God created time, seasons, years, etc for our benefit. He does not live within the same restrictions and laws of nature that we do. He created all those things for us! He sees our past, present and future all at one time. He lives in eternity and that's why He sent Jesus to bring us salvation so we can live in eternity with him. So now that we know of God's holiness, that he lives high and lifted above all else in eternity, now He tells us yes, I live in my throne room in holiness but I also live with the person who is of a contrite and lowly spirit. Contrite in the original Hebrew and Greek translates to "crushed," "broken," or "beaten to pieces". As in the crushing of a hard, proud heart so change can take place. It involves yielding your will to the Lordship of Jesus, feeling true sorrow for having offended God or others, and being teachable and changeable, leaning on the Lord's leading instead of your own. Lowly means humble. Psalm 51:17: "The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart". Then God tells us why He chooses to live with us when we are humbled and broken and ready to learn from Him. 'To revive the spirit of the lowly, and to revive the heart of the contrite.' God doesn't want to leave us broken and humble. He uses that condition to draw us close to Him and to make us more like Him. Now we know more about who He is and how much He loves us. James 4:10 Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will exalt you. He blesses those who bow before Him, who want His best
for their lives instead of their own goals. No, dear brothers
and sisters, I have not achieved it, but I focus on this one thing: Forgetting the past and looking forward to what lies ahead. I press on to reach the end of the race and receive the heavenly prize for which God, through Christ Jesus, is calling us.' Philippians 3:13-14

Hey everyone,
A few years back there was a trend started amongst pastors and churches which then was picked up by the Christian retailers. The trend was focused on the promises of God and pretty soon you had sets of promise cards and promise boxes, there were a multitude of devos focusing on a promise a day, etc. None of those things is inherently bad but it all made it feel gimmicky to me. Those things still exist although some of the hype has died down.
Recently the Lord has had me looking at that trend through a different lens. Any time God's Word is being spread or taught and it is not being taken out of context and used incorrectly THAT IS A GOOD THING!! If people are getting it and applying it to their lives or teaching their children with it, etc IT IS A GOD THING!!
God has had me thinking about His promises and has shown me that because of my attitude I may have discounted, brushed off or not given them the weight and consideration that God's Word should be given and that has been to the detriment of my own walk with the Lord. We have a great God who opens our eyes to our sin and forgives us when we finally get it and humble ourselves before Him in repentance. That is a promise you will find restated throughout the entire Bible. You see by not taking His promises as seriously as I should have, I was offending God. If He said it then it is already a done deal and I can count on that from now and through eternity!! The funny thing is that my problem with the trend was I felt like they were being disrespectful of God's promises and I ended up being disrespectful of God, thinking I knew better, not applying to the situation the truth that God can do anything He wants with whatever He wants, forgetting that I am not God, thank goodness. I should have been thinking about and standing on His promises instead of getting so far off course.
Let's look at a few.
Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today and forever. Hebrews 13:8 If this is true of Jesus, it is true of the entire Godhead, the Father, Son and the Spirit. What does this promise mean to us? If God never changes, wavers, has mood swings, changes His mind or is fickle or wishy washy, then we can always count on His Word to be true, His character to be immovable, and His actions to be consistent. In other words He is 100% faithful, just, and good.
All the promises in the Bible are made by God to His people, to us. They are for us to stand on and live by. If the Son has set you free, you are free indeed. John 8:36 That promise is foundational to our faith, and so is this one. If we confess our sin He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins1 and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. John 1:9. These are assurances that Jesus died and made a way for us to be forgiven, cleansed of our sin and clothed in His righteousness. He freed us from bo***ge to sin and death.
Therefore, if anyone is in Christ Jesus he is a new creation; old things have passed away! BEHOLD, all things have become new! 2 Corinthians 5:17. Redeemed from the inside out!!
I am sure that God Who began the good work in you will keep on working in you until the day Jesus Christ comes again Philippians 1:6. He is not done with us! We are a work in progress but He never gives up on us!
And this one: Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows. Our blessings come from our heavenly Father.
And Matthew 6:30 Seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness and all these things will be added unto you. What things? Food, drink and clothing. In other words, the things required to live. God provides exactly what we need when we are seeking Him out and living in the righteousness that Jesus died to give us.
Obviously, this list is not exhaustive. It is missing approximately 7400+ promises of God!! I encourage you, as you read your Bible each day, look for God's promises in the text. They are everywhere!
The faithful love of the LORD never ends! (Promise) His mercies never cease. (Promise) Great is His faithfulness(promise);His mercies begin afresh every morning. (Promise) The LORD is good to those who depend on him, to those who search for him.(promise) Lamentations 3:22-23, 25
So after putting all of this on the back burner for so long, what led to the change? God reminded me of who He is. One of my favorite verses is a promise from God.
Have you not known? Have you not heard? The everlasting God, the Lord, the Creator of the ends of the earth, neither faints or is weary. His understanding is unsearchable. Isaiah 40:38. His promises are all reflections of His character. He cannot do or say anything contrary to who He is and at His very core He is holy. So we can rest assured that every promise we read in His Word is something He lives by.

Hey everyone,
This is not my normal post. I felt like God wanted me to share what He is doing in my life and where I stand.
When I look back over my life I see good times and bad, times of spiritual struggle and times of physical struggle intermingled with victories and quiet, sweet, joyful moments. But the one constant through it all, the one thing woven among heartbreak and happiness, among trauma and healing, among loss and new found direction is the faithful hand of a loving GOD guiding me and helping me to persevere, strengthening my body and my spirit and moving me ever closer to Him.
I have recently entered a new stage of physical pain, loss of strength and mobility, of crying out to God constantly for help and healing and wondering what we (He and I) are doing when I don't see the answer I am looking for in the time frame I want it to come in. All of this creates an emotional and a spiritual crisis until today when very quietly like the faithful Friend He is, God brought to my remembrance all that we have already walked through and the deep, resonating knowledge that I would not have survived without Him. But not only did I survive, He provided me a way to serve Him when every medical specialist said that I would not be able to do anything for myself. Did my life change? Yes, and in some areas drastically but those drastic changes lead to some of my most fulfilling years of service in His church and in humbling service to those He allowed me to do life with. In the midst of that, just because He is God and He is faithful, He blessed me with the opportunity to see that only He has the power to set things in motion or remove things from my life and when the specialists said I would never work again, I worked joyfully alongside fellow Christians at a ministry for 15 years. And when they said I would never be able to hold my grandkids, God said, 'Sorry, not your call!' And not only did I hold my grandkids, I raised one of them and he was 11lbs 2 Oz at birth and brought us alot of joy! Now I take as much joy in holding his baby girl! God will not be limited or overruled by anyone!
Does all of that eliminate or lessen the physical pain I go through now and the frustration of dealing with a body that won't heal and strengthen? No, nor were the problems I suffered through years ago eliminated. What did all of those memories do for me? They remind me of who this God I serve is! I serve the great I Am of the Old Testament who raised up men who had their own failures and physical issues and he made them heroes of our faith! Men like Moses, and Joshua and David. I serve a God can take fishermen and outcasts and use them to spread the gospel and turn the world upside down. I serve a God who can so drastically change the heart of a man that he can go from terrorizing and killing Christians to preaching Jesus, as the Messiah who died to save the world, witbout regard for his own safety and then wrote a huge chunk of our New Testament, often from a prison cell. I serve a God who faithfully met me where I needed Him most, not on my terms or in my timing, but in His perfect will and time and made it far more beautiful and meaningful than a couple extra years with no pain. In those moments He showed me why Jesus, suffered horrible whipping so that He didnt even look like a man anymore because by every one of those lashes I receive healing, and why Jesus died for me so I could have a relationship with the Fairhful Father who has cared for me all my life. Then Jesus defeated death and the grave so that I don't need to fear physical death because I will spend every moment following my last breath with God who is LOVE and LIGHT and TRUTH and who is always FAITHFUL! So how did those memories help me? My God does not change. He is the same yesterday, today and forever and He will never, ever let me down! I can trust His will, His timing, His choices for me! I know that if things dont happen when and how I think they should that my God is not limited in thought the way I am and He sees my future where I cannot and He still has great things planned for me whatever they look like. I know that I choose to serve Him in whatever way l, in any condition and as often as He let's me from now until I breathe my last. I can lean into Him when I hurt knowing that even if I am not healed here and now, I will be for eternity, and even if my legs refuse to work and keep me moving, they will in eternity and I will RUN INTO THE ARMS OF JESUS!
