Southeast Iowa Sierra Club

Southeast Iowa Sierra Club The Southeast Iowa Group of the Iowa Chapter of the Sierra Club Iowa today is in sore need of a land ethic.

The Southeast Iowa Sierra Club is headquartered in Fairfield Iowa but serves the wider area of Des Moines, Louisa, Henry, Lee, Van Buren, Jefferson, Davis, and Wapello counties. Agricultural practices in our state continue to cause erosion of our rich prairie soils and contribute to the dead zone in the Gulf of Mexico. Our group sponsor films and speakers to educate the public about environmental

issues—especially air and water quality, climate change, and the need for sustainable agriculture. Through initiatives such as tree plantings, prairie, wetland, and forest protection and restoration, we work with our community to create a healthier more beautiful environment. The Southeast Iowa group also supports the Iowa Chapter in lobbying for good environmental legislation.

JFAN's op-ed published in the Southeast Iowa Union on the IIHR water sensors focuses on the importance and necessity of the IIHR network. The water sensors will go dark on June 30 unless state legislators restore its funding this session. It only costs 32¢/person to fund the sensors every year.

This is a public health issue.

"World Soil Day is celebrated annually on December 5th to raise awareness of the importance of healthy soil and advocate for sustainable soil management. Healthy soil is crucial for food security, ecosystem health, and tackling climate change. This day is an opportunity to highlight the vital role that soil plays in our environment—supporting plant growth, filtering water, and storing carbon."
