📸 Streets of Fairfield Photography Exhibit

We're excited to share an update from one of our 2025 FCA Mini-Grant funded artist projects!

Streets of Fairfield by Guy Harvey is a photography exhibit featuring approximately 25 images captured between 2022 and 2025 in Fairfield. The collection highlights a range of styles, including candid street photography, documentary work, and urban scenic imagery—each offering a unique perspective on everyday life and place.

After careful preparation, the artist now has all final prints ready for exhibition. The process involved multiple rounds of refining digital files and producing test prints to ensure the highest possible quality. In fact, about 40% of the grant budget was dedicated to test printing—an investment that allowed for deeper exploration of the printmaking process and resulted in beautifully finished works. This experience has also strengthened the artist's skills for future projects.

Join us in celebrating this thoughtful and visually rich exploration of Fairfield. Thank you for supporting local artists and creative growth!

Iowa Art Quilters Association and Fiber Artists Exhibit Opens May 1

The Fairfield Art Association announces the opening of a new exhibit by "Iowa Art Quilters and Fiber Artists" on Friday May 1st. Eight recognized Iowa artists will be included in this display in the Main Gallery at the Fairfield Arts & Convention Center. A reception for the artists and guests is 6 – 9 PM.

The Art Quilt Exhibit artists include: Karen Anne Babcock Grimes, Sue Kluber, Judy Ludwick, Wendy Read, Barbara Riggs, Kathryn Roe, Jean Taft, and Patricia Weber. Up to 50 original art quilt works will be on display, in many sizes and styles, many are for sale.

Iowa Art Quilters began meeting in 2005 in Grinnell to encourage and support one another in making art quilts. A simple definition of an art quilt is “a quilt you hang on the wall” instead of a quilt you lay on the bed. Art Quilts are designed and constructed by the artist and are original. Art quilts may be abstract or representational, portraying landscapes, faces or objects, or modifying traditional quilt blocks.

Usually art quilts are considered more decorative than functional, with artists frequently using a variety of fabrics, threads and embellishments such as beads, sequins, buttons, metal, wood and other materials. Surface design, like altering the fabric itself, is a common feature. One might add or remove color using dye, paint, or bleach with brushes, stamps or stencils. Artists might go further by selectively damaging the cloth with fire or rust, or less drastically by folding, scrunching or gathering the cloth.

COOP: A STORY OF AN AMISH CONSCIENTIOUS OBJECTOR will be performed on April 25, 2026, 7:30 p.m. at the Fairfield Arts & Convention Center. Written and produced by Mary Swander, Poet Laureate of Iowa from 2009-2019 and honoree of the Iowa Women’s Hall of Fame, it portrays true stories of Amish and Mennonite conscientious objectors who suffered persecution during World War I and World War II for their belief in nonviolence. The initial grant from Fairfield Cultural Alliance and generous donations from the Fairfield business community provided the ability to pursue the project.
