Three Roots International Three Roots International believes that everyone deserves to have the access and resources they need to live, learn, and earn so they can thrive.

Three Roots International cultivates community development and capacity by empowering families through education, health, and income-generating activities. By partnering with vulnerable communities in Ethiopia, we strive to equip vulnerable people to live stable and sustainable lives. We focus our work in one or two communities, providing integrated solutions, to deliver the most impact.

· We deliver high quality health education, empowering community health trainers, and giving direct medical care so that people can LIVE long and healthy lives.

· We restore the opportunity for children and adults to LEARN through high quality early childhood, primary, secondary, and literacy education.

· We equip men and women to EARN a predictable income through business development, savings and vocational skills training.

· We build the capacity of community leaders to maintain program initiatives with skill, knowledge, and integrity, so that communities can THRIVE for years to come.

600 Students. One Shared Commitment. 🌱

At Three Roots International, education is one of three roots, alongside health and income, that together build thriving communities. The new school year has begun, and 600 students from several surrounding rural communities are back in class at the school Three Roots runs!

Education is one of the most reliable paths out of extreme poverty. But keeping a child in school takes more than a classroom. It takes household investment, community support, and attention that lasts for years. That’s why we walk with each child from kindergarten through 8th grade, then help them continue on to high school.

Your support keeps our school running, from teachers and books to the uniforms and fees that might otherwise keep a child at home. You also make possible year-round mentoring and extra support for girls, including life skills education and protection from early marriage, so they can stay in school and keep learning.

Parents and guardians meet regularly with our team and school leaders, so each child’s education is a commitment the whole household shares.

This is what generational transformation looks like: children equipped to learn, live healthier, and one day earn lasting incomes.

Preparing Youth for Lasting Livelihoods 🌱

At Three Roots, income is one of three roots, alongside health and education, that together build thriving communities. Economic resilience starts with young people who are ready to build their own futures.

This season, 30 young people from the rural communities we partner with in Ethiopia’s Oromia region completed an intensive four-day training to prepare for vocational skills training. They spent three days building life skills and one day learning the basics of entrepreneurship.

They’re now ready to make the most of their vocational training and to move toward employment or businesses of their own.

A trade opens the door, and confidence, mindset, and business know-how carry young people through it. When youth gain all of these together, they don’t just learn a skill. They build sustainable livelihoods that can lift their families and strengthen their communities for generations.

This is what generational transformation looks like: young people equipped to live healthier, learn more, and earn lasting incomes.

176 community members in Ethiopia’s Oromia region completed a four-day Community-Led Sanitation training. They learned about hygiene, disease prevention, and latrine use, and they committed to improving their own facilities and inspiring their neighbors to do the same.

Communities Taking the Lead on Sanitation 🌱

At Three Roots International, health is one of three roots, alongside education and income, that together build thriving communities. Lasting change in health starts when communities lead it.

This season, 176 community members from five rural communities in Ethiopia's Oromia region took part in a four-day Community-Led Total Sanitation training with Three Roots. Together, they explored hygiene, disease prevention, latrine use, and what it means to lead change in their own communities.

They didn't just learn. They committed to improving their own sanitation facilities and to encouraging their neighbors to do the same.

When communities own the solution, change takes root. These 176 champions now carry the knowledge and the influence to shape healthier habits household by household, for the next generation as well as this one.

This is what community-led change looks like: families equipped to live healthier, learn more, and earn lasting incomes, on their own terms.

New designs, new skills, new opportunities. 🧺

Women from our basketry project recently finished a 16-day training to build and sharpen their skills. Some were experienced artisans and some had just joined. New participants learned the foundations of the craft. Experienced weavers refined their techniques and learned new basket designs.

When women grow their skills and offer a wider range of products, they can reach more markets and earn more. That brings greater economic independence for themselves and their families.

At Three Roots, we believe in women helping women thrive. Experienced artisans and newcomers are learning side by side, and that is community-led change at work.

Thirty young people are building more than a trade. They're building a future. 🌱

Youth from the communities where Three Roots International works recently finished an intensive four-day preparatory training before they start vocational skills training. They spent three days on life skills and one day on entrepreneurship, so they'll begin their trades ready to make the most of every lesson.

Why does this matter? A trade opens a door, but confidence, mindset and business know-how help young people walk through it. When technical skills come with life skills and entrepreneurship, youth are ready for employment or for starting businesses of their own. That's how sustainable livelihoods begin.

We're proud to walk alongside these young leaders as they work toward lasting incomes and generational transformation for their families and communities.

We recently shared that every Grade 6 and Grade 8 student at the community school passed their national exams this year — and today, we're excited to share what that milestone is already making possible.

Meet Buze — you may remember her from her speech at the opening of the school's computer lab this spring. She graduated Grade 8 this June, and her exam scores earned her a great opportunity: a spot at a boarding school well known for its strong academic performance, like that path Tamrat (who we shared about last week) is continuing on.

This is what hard work, dedicated teachers, and a strong community school make possible: doors that weren't open before, opening for kids in this community, one student at a time. Congratulations, Buze!

"I want to support the students here — even as God and my mother are supporting me."

That's Tamrat. If you caught our last post, you already know part of his story: his mother, Bire, found her courage through a savings group, rebuilding after setbacks that could have stopped her for good. Tamrat watched every bit of it — and this year, he earned a place at a distinguished boarding school, 200 kilometers from home, on the strength of his own national exam scores.

But getting in isn't where his story stops. He's hoping to earn a scholarship to study aerospace engineering in America. And when he's done, he wants to come back and support the students in his own community, the same way his mother and his faith have supported him.

Here he is outside the classroom, big dreams, and still just a kid who knows how to have fun.

This is Tamrat. He's 200 kilometers from home at a distinguished boarding school, an opportunity he earned through his national exam scores.

Back in May, we told you about his mother, Bire — a mother who started saving five birr a week and never stopped moving forward, even after setbacks. Tamrat was watching the whole time.

Our team met with him recently, and he spoke to us clearly in English, without a translator — with a ready smile and joyful outlook that made an impression on all of us.
