For our final team spotlight before next Sunday's StarKid, we introduce you to Team Madison Strong! Madison is a true fixture in the Inova community, where her resilience has inspired us all. Madison's family shares her story:

Madison’s journey began at just 18 weeks when her membranes ruptured prematurely (PPROM). She amazed everyone right from the start, holding on for 6 weeks without any amniotic fluid. Born at 24 weeks, she spent the first 5 months of her life in the Inova NICU. She was discharged on home oxygen and has continued to make incredible strides ever since.

Her journey has touched nearly every corner of the Inova Children’s network — pulmonology, cardiology, GI, and Inova rehab — each team cheering her forward every step of the way. Now 4 years old, Madison’s premature lungs still make it difficult for her to fight seasonal bugs and infections, making her a frequent visitor to the Inova PICU. Despite the challenges, she continues to amaze everyone with her strength and resilience. She lights up every room with her fierce spirit, infectious joy, and heartwarming bravery. Our family is forever grateful for dedicated team at INOVA for the exceptional care and support they have provided throughout Madison’s journey.

We can't wait to see super StarKid Madison THIS SUNDAY!

For this week’s team spotlight, we introduce you to Myanna’s Hearts! Myanna and her family are a fixture in the Inova Children’s heart community and at StarKid. If you’ve been a pediatric heart surgery patient at Inova, you’ve probably received one of their special totes. Myanna has participated in multiple StarKid races over the years along with many family and friends, including our virtual race in 2020. Her mom shares their story:

Myanna was born with two undetected congenital Heart defects. At 5 months old, she was admitted to Inova Fairfax hospital by her cardiologist, Dr. Callahan. He was concerned that she wasn't drinking and that she might be dehydrated, as she was only 8lbs. She was sent for some tests and a cardiac catheterization. They determined that the holes in her heart (both an atrial and a venticular septal defect, or ASD and VSD) were larger than they realized. Dr. Shen and Dr. Callazo did open heart surgery two days later. She has been doing well ever since and is now 15! Myanna enjoys seeing her fellow heart warriors at the run and participating in the fun activities.

We can’t wait to see Myanna and her family on June 7th!

For this week’s team spotlight, we bring you Team Superhero Miles! From his family:

Miles is our superhero. He was born with a congenital urethral stricture which led to significant kidney and bladder issues. He has endured dozens of procedures and surgeries. He has been cared for at many pediatric hospitals in Virginia, Maryland, DC, and Pennsylvania - but Inova Children’s will always be our home.

This 5K is Miles’ favorite day of the year. He asked to start designing his team’s t-shirt months and months ago. This race gives him such pride and positivity. For a guy who has been through so much and had so many hard days - and has more challenges to come - this race, on this day, is his happy place. Watching him celebrate with his friends, family, and medical team is a priceless experience.

Join Superhero Miles, his team, and many more Inova superheroes on June 7th and come see why this is Miles’s favorite day!

StarKid is the opportunity to celebrate our Inova practioners as well as our healthy kids! James .mile11 began his running career at a StarKid 5k and has since run a marathon and many more races. James shares his story:

In the hospital, time behaves strangely. Entire days can revolve around a lab value, a scan, a quiet nod from a physician in the hallway. And yet the children themselves often remain improbably light-filled, arguing about cartoons, laughing at terrible jokes, asking when they can go outside again. Their resilience has a way of rearranging your sense of proportion.

Running became, for me, a response to that. At first, it was simply motion, a way to carry the emotional weight of the work somewhere beyond fluorescent lights and inpatient rooms. But over time, it became something more communal. Miles turned into conversations. Races became gatherings. The act itself, repetitive and unglamorous, began to feel meaningful precisely because it could be shared.

The StarKid 5K captures this sense of community better than almost anything else. Patients, families, neighbors, and even strangers all move together in the same direction, united by the shared bond of showing up for our pediatric patients.

The atmosphere around it feels larger than the race itself, a reminder that even in the hardest seasons of illness, the community is standing beside and supporting our amazing kiddos.

****

Thank you, James! We are so grateful to you for all you do for your patients and our community!

Happy Third Heartiversary* to StarKid Maya! Her parents shared her story and the impact has had on their lives:

Maya was already in the high risk category during pregnancy. But, we could never have imagined that our newborn baby girl would need multiple procedures by the time she was 6 months old, including open heart surgery for a congenital heart defect. This was an unbelievably scary and stressful time for our family, but the medical teams at Inova have been amazing. The cardiology, cardiothoracic surgery, and general surgery teams have been truly wonderful while helping us navigate this difficult time.

We want to thank all the members of the Inova interdisciplinary teams that have assisted in caring for Maya. She is now a curious and opinionated pre-schooler. And she is living up to her nickname…our little tiger cub!!

She looks forward to running the StarKid race each year and always has a blast!

We want to continue to help raise awareness and assistance for these very important programs from Inova. So again, thank you for all you do!

*a heartiversary is the anniversary of a heart patient's (or "heart warrior") lifesaving heart surgery or procedure. Some heart warriors have many heartiversaries - and all are worth celebrating! Please join us on June 7th at to celebrate all does for little hearts!
