SHARING....DC/DOX - Film Highlight - JOYBUBBLES
https://dcdoxfest.com/films/joybubbles/

Born blind and yearning for connection, Joe Engressia discovers as a young boy that he can manipulate the global telephone system by whistling precise tones—an uncanny ability that opens up a world far beyond his immediate surroundings. What begins as a personal lifeline soon places him at the center of an emerging underground network of “phone phreaks,” early hackers who challenged the boundaries of a tightly controlled communications system.

But behind this unlikely technical prowess lies a deeply human story of isolation, resilience, and imagination. As Joe reinvents himself as Joybubbles, he crafts a life on his own terms—one shaped as much by play, fantasy, and chosen identity as by the constraints of a society that often struggled to accommodate difference. Through archival recordings, personal artifacts, and Joybubbles’ own voice, the film traces a singular journey that is by turns whimsical and deeply affecting.

At once a portrait of a subculture and an intimate exploration of one man’s search for belonging, the film reveals how a seemingly small act—one boy reaching out through a telephone line—helped spark a cultural shift that continues to resonate in the digital age.

Meet Oliver, a 12-year-old murder-mystery enthusiast with a vivid imagination and a rare genetic condition. Inspired by his love of the genre, he sets out to bring his own mystery to the screen—with a little help from his friends. The script is written, the cast is set, and Oliver is ready to call “action” on his most ambitious venture yet. What unfolds is more than a creative project—it’s a testament to friendship, resilience, and the magic that emerges when a community comes together.

Offering an intimate window into growing up with disability and the power of community, KIDS LIKE ME celebrates the pursuit of creative dreams and what becomes possible through collective care. Directors Cynthia Lowen (BATTLEGROUND) and Jon Cohrs (BACKWATER) craft a story that honors both Oliver’s vision and the realities his family navigates every day, revealing how creativity can transform challenges into connection.
