Faith Foodbank is a 501c3 organization doing business as Faith Family Village. They are one in the same. The state of WA and the City of Everett invested in construction of the Village. $125,000 of start up costs was loaned by Faith Food Bank to Interfaith Shelter to pay for personnel costs, supplies, fixtures, etc. With City funds you must pay for things up front and the city reimburses you. Interfaith did not have funds but was in charge of financial things so all I could do was loan the money to get us started.
Unfortunately this shelter did not turn out to be the wonderful place I dreamed of. in 12 months only one family moved directly from the Village to an apartment. There were issues with background checks, fights between residents, filthy homes, people not trying to get jobs, etc. Yes some people did get their i.d. and social security cards. Some got jobs. Some got jobs and lost them right away. Some were under the influence. Police were called at least 6 times. No consequences were allowed for bad things happening or no effort being made.
When I tried to get things back under control, I was met by resistence by both Interfaith and the City.
In November we stopped taking new families. Now there are no families.
I have withdrawn my support for Faith Family Village and notified the Department of Licensing so my nonprofit is no longer responsible.
What will happen? It is no longer my responsiblility.
I am signing a new rental agreement for the food bank so that will continue as it has the last 10 years.
Now it will be up to Faith Lutheran Church to decide if it was to rent the church property where the Village is to someone. Or if the church wants to allow the City to take back the pallet homes. It is a very complicated issue. If the Church were to decide to continue on its own, it would probably be 2 months before the pallet shelter could start again and they would give it a new name.
This was a very tough and sad decision. I worked very hard for 3 years to get it opened. I invested a lot of money that will never be returned. I saw families so happy to move there with their kids but saw them leave just to go to another shelter or sleeping on someones floor. I wanted this to work so bad..........
In the Bible Ecclesiastics says there is a time for every season.
a time to laugh, a time to cry
there was a time for me to take on this challenge
a time to work so hard but now it is my time to rest
and hopefully someone else will use this time to recreate something that works.
After lots of quiet time and contemplation, God told me its okay to let it go cause I tried my best.
Please pray for me and also for all those moms and dads who remain unsheltered.
