Happy Columbus Day.

"It was the Lord who put into my mind (I could feel His hand upon me) the fact that it would be possible to sail from there to the Indies. No one should fear to undertake any task in the name of our Savior, if it is just and if the intention is purely for His holy service. Today we celebrate a day that changed our world like few others when it came to the recognition of the most fundamental rights of mankind as even the biblical call to proclaim liberty in Leviticus 25:10 is inscribed on our union's Liberty Bell itself.

But we must maintain eternal vigiliance in the defense of that liberty so as to ensure those who sacrificed their lives, fortunes, and sacred honor did not do so in vain.

For the first time in years, no prayer service would be conducted at the U.S. Capitol as one evangelical leader from a Christian group was reportedly denied use of the venue.

Today we're thankful for Columbus' voyage despite modern efforts to diminish it.

Bill Federer in his American Minute for today says:

'Columbus most likely heard the story of Irish monk St. Brendan, who sailed west in 530 AD to "The Land of the Promised Saints which God will give us on the last day."

'Columbus would have known of the Christian Viking Leif Erickson's voyage in the year 1000 to Vinland.

'The great Genoese lived and died under the illusion that he had reached the outmost verge of Asia; and though even in his lifetime men realized that what he had found was no less than a new world."

'In his journal, Columbus referred to the native inhabitants as "indians" as he was convinced he had successfully arrived in India:

"So that they might be well-disposed towards us, for I knew that they were a people to be. ..converted to our Holy Faith rather by love than by force, I gave to some red caps and to others glass beads ...

'They became so entirely our friends that ... I believe that they would easily be made Christians."

On this day 400 years ago, September 16, 1620, the Mayflower set sail with just over 100 people from Plymouth, England. Their goal was the "advancement of the Christian faith" in the new world.
