Lead can hide in the soil around your home, especially in houses built before 1978. Your shoes track it inside.

Every trip through the front door can carry that soil across your floors, right where your child plays and crawls. You can't test the soil yourself or control what's outside, but you can control what comes inside. A shoes-off habit at the door is one of those quiet, everyday actions that adds up to real protection.

🔍 If you rent your home, you might wonder: Will getting my child tested cause problems with my landlord?

Here's what actually happens. The test itself is confidential, between you and your child. Your medical information stays private.

If your child's level does come back elevated, the health department checks your home for lead and shares a report with your landlord about the property's condition, not your child's medical information. That process is about getting the home fixed, not getting you in trouble.

Many of Evansville's rental homes were built before 1978, which means they may have lead paint, older plumbing, or soil with lead. You didn't create those conditions, but you can protect your child from them. VCHD also offers families free support like home visits, cleaning supplies, and nutritional guidance. Every child who received intervention saw their levels go down.

Lead can be in dust, dirt, and soil. Your child picks it up on their hands just by playing, crawling, or touching surfaces around the house. A quick wash before eating and after coming inside interrupts that cycle every time.

This isn't about being a perfect parent. You're already doing so much to keep them safe. Handwashing is just one more small habit that adds a layer of protection, and it's one your child can learn to do with you.
