Planning your garden? Don’t get buried in tomato plants! 🍅

If you’re a family of four, the question I hear most often this time of year is: "How many tomato plants should I actually put in the ground?"

It’s easy to get over-ambitious at the garden center, but here is the quick, realistic breakdown to help you plan for a successful harvest.

If you’re a beginner, 6–8 plants is the sweet spot. It’s enough to learn the ropes—staking, watering, and pruning—without feeling overwhelmed.

Nature is unpredictable. Sometimes a bumper crop happens, sometimes it doesn’t. Planting a little extra gives you the flexibility to share the bounty with neighbors or friends.

Keep a simple garden journal this year. Note what worked and what didn't. It’s the best way to optimize your harvest for next season.
