Lane County Sheriff's Mounted Posse

Lane County Sheriff's Mounted Posse We are volunteers who use our equestrian skills to provide assistance to the Sheriff and the citizens

The Lane County Sheriff’s Mounted Posse was founded in 1941. The war was taking a toll on staffing levels, so the posse was created to help share in and lighten the work load. Today, the posse's primary function in service to the Sheriff and the citizens of Lane County is in serving as a fully certified part of the search and rescue program. We also manage the equestrian arena at Mount Pisgah and

act as ambassadors of public relations for the Sheriff’s office. The Posse is involved in a wide range of activities including ceremonies, parades, public relations, education, search and rescue, parking, security work as fundraising, and a drill team to keep our horses in top physical condition. We are family-oriented and find time for fellowship, celebration, family campouts and trail rides. Please contact us if you would like more information about using the arena or have questions about joining.

More Mounted Patrol Training for our Sheriffs Posse. The Mack’s are former Portland Police Trainers and officers and excellent instructors teaching our posse Troop Drills and nuisance training. Helps our riders and horses be more prepared for working in public crowds whether it be parades, parking or patrolling tailgaters. We are appreciative of the opportunity to be able to get such amazing instruction to improve our skills.

OAMP 2026 Annual Convention was well attended by LCSMP. Brought home the memorial trophy for winning the 2025 Drill Competition at Shodeo. Our Captain, Dave brought home the High Score .22 cal Pistol Shoot memorial trophy and won the Shodeo Open Champion. The biggest honor went to our very own Life Time member, Ted Hansey, for his 30+ years of dedicated service to OAMP, LCSMP, pony club, 4-H and OHSET. Ted received the prestigious OAMP W. Dean Fitzwater Memorial Community Service Award. It’s an honor to still have Ted an active member of our posse. Congratulations to all our members and a great time at annual OAMP convention. A big thanks to Linn County Sheriff’s Mounted Posse for all their hard work and putting on a great convention.

What is Equine Herpesvirus (EHV)?

You've probably heard it called Rhinopneumonitis, a respiratory tract disease that results in "snotty noses," but EHV is more than that. Depending on the strain, this virus can also cause abortion in broodmares, and equine herpesvirus myeloencephalopathy (EHM) — the often-deadly neurologic form of the disease.

Because EHV is endemic in many equine populations, most mature horses have developed some immunity through repeated natural infection. However, they remain a source of infection for other susceptible horses, like weaned foals and yearlings, who usually display symptoms of the respiratory form of the disease in autumn and winter. Performance and show horses are also more vulnerable to the disease, as they commingle with unfamiliar equines in close quarters while under stress from travel and competition.

Proper biosecurity protocols can help reduce EHV outbreaks and other disease transmission. A variety of vaccines are also available for protection against both the respiratory and abortive form of the disease, but there is no equine licensed vaccine at this time that has a label claim for protection against the neurologic form (EHM).

Consult your primary equine veterinarian to learn more about this disease and work with them to determine the optimal vaccine protocol for your horses.

You can learn more about all three forms on the Equine Disease Communication Center's website here: https://equinediseasecc.org/infectious-diseases
