The Eugene Darkroom Group is a 501c3 non-profit in Eugene, Oregon.

Our mission is to preserve and promote film photography and provide artistic education to the community.

EDG welcomes all members of the photographic community to exhibit their work! The main requirement is that your work must involve an analog technique at some part of the creative process. (Examples: fully analog, shot on film but printed digitally, shot digitally and printed on photo paper or with other alt-process methods like cyanotype/tintype/pictograms, etc.)

Participants may submit up to 3 pieces to display on the gallery walls and/or loose prints (not limited quantity; packaged in a clear bag with a stiff backer if needed). There is a small fee to enter: $10 for EDG members, or $15 for non-members.

CALLING ALL ANALOG PHOTO-MAKERS!

If you'd like to feature some of your work in this year's Community Chest show, held at Whiteaker Printmakers, the time is approaching fast!!! There's just under two weeks until the dates for artwork drop-off begin, but you're definitely going to want to register through our website before then, just to be safe! ;-)

We are holding three dates & times for artwork drop-off in the hope that we are able to accommodate varying availability.

Friday, September 18th, from 5-7pm
Saturday, September 19th, from 1-3pm
Sunday, September 20th, from 10am-12pm

I know this is short notice, but TOMORROW (Sunday 8/30) we're going to be doing a pre-sunrise hike to the top of Skinner Butte. The hope is to get to the top of the Butte before the Sun and greet it with our cameras! 🌞😊

We will be leaving the Willamette Trailhead at 5:20am, but we encourage you to get there sooner!

CALL TO ARTISTS!!!

Our annual art show "Community Chest" is coming back again this fall! Participation is open to EDG members and non-members alike. Held once again at Whiteaker Printmakers, we're excited to bring you some great art in a phenomenal space.

The show starts with a public opening reception on September 25th, 5-8PM, and will continue through October 23rd. The gallery will also be open Noon to 5PM on Fridays and Saturdays, for the duration of the show.

We are thrilled that this season's classes have been met with enthusiastic reception! Thanks everyone!

Most of our upcoming offerings are already full, but there are still 5 open spots for August 3rd's course on Manual Camera Function & Shooting Basics!

This is a great course for anyone who is new to film and who may be looking to get more comfortable navigating a manual camera. It will be held from 10am to noon, which leaves plenty of time left in the day to practice your skills!

Bring your own camera OR let us know if you need to use one of ours! (limited quantity of cameras available)

If you've been wanting some guidance on analog photography processes, we've got a few courses coming up this summer that are worth looking into!

All three courses will have a session taking place in the months of July & August, and have limited spots available.

MANUAL CAMERA FUNCTION & SHOOTING BASICS

This class is for those who are interested in working in a darkroom, but are unfamiliar with shooting film. The instructor will guide you through the basics of manual camera function and shooting on black & white 35mm film to prepare you for the work in the darkroom. Bring your own camera or let us know if you need to use one of ours! (Limited quantity of cameras available).
Offered this semester (Summer 2026):

Thursday, July 9th, 6-8PM
Monday, August 3, 10AM-Noon
(Limit 5 participants per session.)

FILM PROCESSING FOR BEGINNERS

This flexible and customizable course is designed for beginners with limited previous experience processing their own black and white film (35mm or 120 format). The instructor will guide you through all of the intricacies of developing your own film. Bring an undeveloped roll of black and white film (that you have already shot) with you, and we’ll provide equipment and chemistry!
Offered this semester (Summer 2026):

Thursday July 16th, 6-8PM
Monday, August 10th, 10AM-Noon
(Limit 2 participants per session.)

DARKROOM PRINTING FOR BEGINNERS

This class is designed for beginners with limited previous experience making black and white prints in a darkroom. The instructor will guide you through the basics of darkroom printing. Bring a developed roll of black and white film with you and we’ll provide everything you need to make your prints!
Offered this semester (Summer 2026):

Thursday, July 23rd, 6-8PM
Monday, August 17th, 10AM-Noon
(Limit 2 participants per session.)

Join us, Saturday June 20th & Sunday June 21st, for a weekend workshop to learn (or refresh) all the skills you need to shoot, develop, and print with analog black & white photography. After taking this workshop, you will be ready to join Eugene Darkroom Group and use our facilities, or take your skills and work on your own!

Here's an idea of what you can expect from both days!

Saturday~
9 to 11AM: Basics of manual camera function and shooting on black & white 35mm film.

11AM to 12PM:Take an outdoor photo walk to shoot a short roll of film (10 to 12 exposures).

12 to 2PM: Develop the roll you just shot!

Sunday~
9AM to 1PM: Basics of darkroom printing: Make a contact sheet showing all your images; then choose one or two images to enlarge onto 5x7 inch photo paper.

1 to 2PM (optional): Your chance to become a member! We will review our member agreements and payment requirements, and sign you up!

Bring a film camera with you; all other materials will be provided. Ideally, the camera should allow manual controls, but even a point-and-shoot is fine! (If you need to borrow a camera, please let us know by email after you register.)

Coming up, on SATURDAY May 30th, join us for the next Photo Walk! This time we're doing things a little differently; with a Photo Hike at Silver Falls State Park!

We'll be meeting up at the South Falls day use area at 11am, which is about a 1.5 hour drive from the Eugene/Springfield area, and there is a $10 parking fee at the day use area, so we encourage folks to carpool if you'd like!

Be sure to wear shoes that are comfortable and provide good traction! All pace and capability levels are welcome! We will try to keep the group together as much as possible, but we encourage you to "choose your own adventure"!

You can expect the hike to be around 3-5 miles total, but if this is not accessible to you, we welcome you to join us for as much as you feel able!

Besides your camera and film, you'll want to bring enough food and water to comfortably (and safely) complete your hike and make it back to your car. Comfortable clothing with layers are also encouraged!
