Polaris Project estimates there are 9,000 illicit massage businesses in every state. While not all massage parlors participate in labor or s*x trafficking, this is not an uncommon avenue for folks to be exploited.

Eugene police arrested the owners of a massage parlor last week, accusing them of promoting prostitution from their spa.

Trafficking doesn’t always look the way we expect.

Warning signs often appear as patterns of behavior, control, or isolation, not just a single moment. Recognizing the signs is a critical step in prevention.

While January is Human Trafficking Awareness month, to really combat trafficking requires year-round awareness. You can make a difference in your community by bringing meaningful conversations into your daily routines, raising awareness and empathy for folks at risk, become a foster parent as foster kids are at higher risk of exploitation. We are encouraged to see legislation pass to support survivors, but we still have a long way to go! The Trafficking Survivors Relief Act which passed earlier this month makes it possible for survivors to vacate non-violent convictions and expunge related arrest records, recognizing crimes were committed under duress from exploitation, aligning federal law with state efforts, and allowing use of existing grants for legal aid to seek relief, establishing a crucial path for survivors to clear records from offenses like fraud or drug crimes forced upon them. National Center on Sexual Exploitation has been advocating for survivors, and this is not the only victory from the previous year!

Congress passed the TAKE IT DOWN Act, finally making it a federal crime ot upload s*xual images of someone without their consent. Their Twitter lawsuit overcame Section 230 immunity was allowed to proceed, making it the first federal lawsuit in history to proceed against a social media company for its failure to report child s*xual abuse materials.

Happy New Year!

With the Senate’s passage of the Trafficking Survivors Relief Act, survivors of human trafficking will no longer be punished for crimes they were forced to commit—opening doors to justice, healing, and opportunity. This is a major step toward a system that supports, not retraumatizes, survivors. Let’s keep pushing for dignity and justice for all, read our full statement below. 👇💙
