East Mountain Area Community Emergency Response Team (CERT)

East Mountain Area Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) The East Mountain Area Community Emergency Response Team was established in November 2010. It was adopted by the Torrance County Emergency Manager on 6.15.15.

The group of volunteers serves to help the first responders within the East Mtn communities. The East Mountain Area Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) program educates people about disaster preparedness. CERT members are trained to assist first responders in fire safety, light search and rescue, disaster medical operations and team organizational skills. Using the training learned in the cla

ssroom and during "hands on" exercises, CERT members can assist others in their neighborhood or workplace following an event when professional responders are not immediately available to help. CERT members also are encouraged to support emergency response agencies by taking a more active role in emergency preparedness projects in their community. The East Mountain Area CERT team was adopted by the City of Edgewood, to provide support to the Edgewood Police Department. In addition, the team will provide support to the Albuquerque area CERT. Also, a special Animal Evacuation team is was formed to help people in the East Mountains become more knowledgable of their options in the evacuation of their animals in an emergency situation. Unknown to us, our organization was nominated by our former Emergency Manager Martin Lucero to receive a FEMA award for the services we provided during the Dog Head Fire in 2016. Our organization won the Region 6 (6 states) award for outstanding service and going above and beyond to serve our community. We are a small and mighty group of volunteers who love to support our local communities in times of need!

An article about CERT appeared in the Mountain View Telegraph written by Nicole Maxwell Reporter. She took lots of pictures of all the animals, but was the only one she used. Go figure!

The first priority during any emergency is to make sure people are OK. Second is to make sure our animals are taken care of.
