They’re asking themselves:

“Will it feel safe if I reach out?”

That’s the part most parents never realize.

Estranged adult children don’t come back because you want them to.

They come back when they believe the emotional experience will be different.

And that shift doesn’t happen through words.

It happens through emotional safety.

Nearly 30% of Americans say they’re estranged from at least one close family member. Let that sink in for a second. This isn’t rare anymore. It’s not “just your family.” It’s a growing pattern happening quietly in homes everywhere.
