Registration for Hockey in New Jersey is now OPEN in Englewood! FREE for Englewood residents.

“The Jersey Blind hockey team practiced nearly every week this fall at MacKay Ice Rink in Englewood, and is now playing most Fridays in Secaucus through February.

Schneider began practicing about two years ago at the Englewood rink for the U.S. national blind hockey team, which faces Canada each year in April.

“It’s really inspirational to see,” said Ken Katz, the director at MacKay, which makes the rink available to the team at no cost. “Whenever we have ice time, we give them time.”

Last February, the rink hosted a blind hockey tournament. Players from across the U.S., Canada, England and Scandinavia came to Englewood to compete.

“It’s just another example of the human spirit, of how people rise above their challenges and come together,” Katz said.”

Josh Schneider lost 98% of his eyesight and retired from teaching at age 37. Then he found blind hockey with Jersey Blind.

This past weekend, the Mackay Ice Rink - John T Wright Arena hosted the Dented Puck Foundation.

The blind hockey players use a large hollow metal puck, which is larger in size than a regular puck, and filled with ball bearings that make a rattling sound when hit.

Players were from Finland, the UK, and cities across the US and Canada.
