In New Jersey, participation has decreased by more than 38,000 people since went into effect. Between July 2025 and February 2026, enrollment fell from 816,778 to 778,176 participants, according to data.

Nationally, the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities estimates that more than 3.5 million Americans have already been unenrolled.

Unfortunately, these numbers are expected to continue growing. As households lose access to the SNAP benefits they rely on each month to purchase groceries, hunger and food insecurity will increase, creating serious consequences for families, children, and seniors across NJ.

On Thursday, Rep Josh Gottheimer announced the Feed Our Kids Act, a proposed federal legislation that would provide free breakfast, lunch, and afterschool snacks to every student in K-12 public schools across America.

Hunger Free New Jersey's director, Lisa Pitz, joined community advocates, educators, and leaders to show support and speak about the importance of protecting and strengthening school nutrition programs at a time when many families are already struggling with rising food costs and economic uncertainty.

"Offering free school breakfast and lunch is the most effective, efficient, and equitable way to reduce childhood food insecurity," Lisa explained.

The would:
• Provide free breakfast, lunch, and afterschool snacks to every student in K-12 public schools across America.
• Eliminate unpaid meal debt from schools and remove burdensome application paperwork for qualifying families.
• Ensure meals are nutritious and locally sourced whenever possible.
• Extend meal access during summer break and sudden school closures so no child’s nutrition falls through the cracks.
• Eliminate the stigma associated with means-tested meal programs by making access universal.
• Require a congressional report on the impacts of free school meals and recommendations to strengthen nutritious, locally sourced meal access.

Thank you, Congressman, for continuing to elevate the issue of child hunger and the need for strong federal nutrition programs.

FRAC is deeply troubled that the House of Representatives passed a Farm Bill (224–200) that fails to reverse the $187 billion in Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) cuts enacted under the budget reconciliation law, H.R. 1. https://frac.org/news/housepassagefarmbillapr2026

April is Senior Hunger Awareness Month. More than 200,000 older adults in New Jersey are food insecure, meaning they don’t always have access to the nutritious food they need.

can provide eligible seniors with extra support to buy groceries. In New Jersey, the minimum monthly SNAP benefit is $95, helping older adults stretch their budgets and access healthier meals. Research shows that SNAP participation among older adults is linked to improved health, lower health care costs, and reduced hospital and nursing home admissions.

Still, many eligible older adults don’t apply because of technology barriers, stigma, or misconceptions about benefit amounts. Raising awareness can help more seniors stay healthy.

The proposed House Agriculture Committee Farm Bill won’t reverse the damaging cuts and program changes enacted through . We must advocate for a version of the bill that restores critical SNAP funding.

The Congressional Budget Office (CBO) has confirmed that the impact of the cuts will place millions of children, older adults, parents, veterans, the unhoused, people with disabilities, and working families in jeopardy and at risk of hunger. Farmers, food retailers, local communities, and the economy will also be negatively impacted.

Sometimes, access isn’t about eligibility; it’s about awareness. Yesterday, the General Assembly advanced A3882, sponsored by Speaker Craig J. Coughlin, Assemblywoman Annette Quijano, and Assemblyman Dan Hutchison, to make sure families can easily find and understand how to apply for free and reduced-price school meals. By requiring schools to prominently post application links and clear, accessible videos, this bill would help remove barriers and connect more students to the meals they need to learn, grow, and thrive. No child should miss out on support simply because the information wasn’t easy to find.
