In 2019, researchers in Utah tried something unusual to help restore degraded desert rivers.

They brought in beavers.

Master’s student Emma Doden and her team captured 47 “nuisance” beavers that were being removed from farms and other properties and relocated them to the Price and San Rafael Rivers.

The idea was simple.

Beavers are ecosystem engineers.

Their dams slow water down, create ponds and wetlands, and can make desert streams more complex and useful for fish and other wildlife.

But moving a beaver into the desert isn’t easy.

Many of the relocated animals moved far from where they were released, while others were killed by predators. Researchers found that survival and staying in the release areas were much lower for translocated beavers than for resident adults.

Still, the beavers that stayed began building and maintaining dams.

Researchers recorded more river reaches with beaver dams after the translocations than before, suggesting the animals could contribute to restoration even when the experiment didn’t go exactly as planned.

The project is still a work in progress. Later research found that artificial beaver-dam structures did not significantly improve the survival or settlement of relocated beavers, showing just how difficult restoration can be in unpredictable desert rivers.

But the experiment demonstrated something important.

Sometimes restoring a damaged ecosystem doesn’t mean building everything yourself.

Sometimes you can bring back an animal that has been doing the work for thousands of years and let nature take it from there.

Panchito, the elephant seal that captivated Nayarit, returned to the ocean after resting for four days on the Mexican coast. During his stay, experts from PROFEPA monitored the animal to ensure that he completed his natural skin-shedding process without interference. The community stood out for its exemplary behavior in respecting the safety perimeter and not stressing the animal. Panchito’s successful return highlights the importance of giving space to wildlife so that it can complete its biological cycles on Mexican beaches.

This really bothers me that a government agency would disregard life and environment. 💔https://www.facebook.com/share/14...

Dolly Parton’s life was full of philanthropy, especially when it came to animal conservation and rescue efforts. Dolly loved animals; her impact and legacy will remain through these programs she so loved.

The Eagle Mountain Sanctuary at Dollywood was a project with the American Eagle Foundation to oversee and educate people on bald eagle conservation. This project has helped the many efforts to recover bald eagle populations and get them removed from the endangered species list.

The Doggy Parton clothing and accessory brand donates portions of its funds to Willa B. Farms, a non-profit rescue from Old Hickory, Tennessee.

She also wrote several children’s books about her god-dog, Billy The Kid.

Dolly Parton will be deeply missed by her community, and all other communities she touched with her outreach efforts to help both people and animals alike.
Rest in peace, Dolly. 🕊️❤️
