When all else fails, plant trees.

The ancient sweet chestnut trees which cradle our garden space have seen all manner of things come and go.

They send seed down to the garden floor while their roots go deeper than we can imagine.

Holding things together.
Helping us grow the future.

If you haven’t been to the garden in a while, pop down and see what’s growing. It’s a peaceful spot to encounter nature and take a moment to breathe. 💚

Wild Seeds of Hope

What’s more hopeful than planting seeds?
Native Sussex wildflowers not only grow but thrive in poor soil and hard conditions. They teach us resilience and help other species survive just by being. Put them in the right place and they will spread like powerful peaceful demonstrations and will keep coming back no matter the circumstances.

At Apron we have been saving and collecting wild flower and herb seeds from the Community Garden and our own gardens and allotments, and learning from the Wildflower Conservation Society in Stamner Park, who we also by seeds from.

Alongside propagating wild flowers for our new chalk wildflower garden in Buckingham Park we have been sharing seeds, growing tips and advice on where to plant your own wildflower meadow - however small.

Last week we welcomed the Stubbornly Hopeful Club to a wildflower workshop at the garden.

If you would like to book a workshop with us for your group or team please get in touch: [email protected]

As spring unfolds we are delighted to share that the planting of the first hedgerow saplings has taken place at the Riverside site in Lancing, as proposals for our Apron Community Farm take shape.

Last week, Seaside Primary School and residents living most local to the site were invited to help plant the first saplings.

This activity was led by Apron, with the support of the Woodland Trust and Weald to Waves. And was an opportunity for local residents to be part of this exciting moment for the farm, by planting a tree.

Further tree planting sessions are being organised with local Lancing community organisations, including Adur Voluntary Action, to ensure members of the local community have an opportunity to be involved in this important first step to creating their local community farm.

As we continue our work developing the project regular updates and opportunities for involvement will be shared with the community.

Huge thanks to the Woodland Trust for supporting our project with 400 native hedgerow and woodland tree saplings, and to Weald to Waves for supporting our planting scheme.
