Closing the week with some media mentions for the Mascoma Valley Regional High School teams that we work with. Have a wonderful weekend!

🏑 FIELD HOCKEY 🏑
Hopkinton 6, Mascoma 1
Key athletes: Sophia Smith (1 goal); Addie Irwin (20 saves); Paryton Clement, Penny Roman, and Tori Petty

Key moment: Irwin’s 20 saves and Roman’s assists on defense kept us in the game up until the fourth.

Coach’s quote: “We knew going into tonight it was going to be a tough game, we came out strong and scored first, but gassed out by the fourth quarter. With a small squad and no subs, we have to work on our endurance.” – Danielle Pusher, Mascoma
https://vnews.com/2026/08/27/field-hockey-hopkinton-6-mascoma-1/

Mascoma (from VN Season Preview)
Coach: Danielle Pushee (5).

League: NHIAA Division III.

Last Year: 11-3-1, lost in tournament’s second round.

Top Returners: Junior — Tori Petty (F); Sophomore — Sophia Smith (F).

Newcomers: Sophomores — Addie Irwin (G; while not new to the team, this will be her first season in goal for us), Penny Roman (M/D; not new to the team; will be starting for us this year).

Coach’s Analysis: “We have some strong leadership in our returning players, so I’m looking to them to step up in difficult situations and lead their team on the field. We are struggling with numbers this year; we have a solid nine in our returning players, but finding people to fill out the roster with experience has been difficult. If we are able to adjust our style of play and use our strengths, we should be competitive this year while bringing new players along.” — Danielle Pushee

Mascenic 4, Mascoma 1
Key athletes: Addie Irwin (21 saves); Penny Roman played solid defense; Tori Petty (1 goal)

Key moment: Irwin came home huge in goal with time out, defending two defensive corners in a row.

Coach’s quote: “We played a solid game. We had improvement from our first game; it’s hard to for four full quarters against teams with fresh legs off the bench, but I believe we will keep improving.” – Danielle Pushee, Mascoma

Mascoma 1, Stevens 0
Key athletes: Mascoma: Penny Roman, Abby Harkins, Tori Petty and Sophia Smith.

Key Moment: Smith broke the stalemate in the 4th quarter, scoring the Royals’ winning goal.

🎣 BASS FISHING 🎣
Mascoma (from VN Season Preview)
Coach: Eric Moulton (8).

Last Year: Qualified for NHIAA tournament and finished sixth.

Top Returners: Seniors — Lincoln Butterfield; Juniors — Brayden Gillies, Kaula Moreno; Sophomores — Connor Sullivan, Hunter Miller, Jaxon Butterfield.

Newcomers: Freshmen — Mathew Rand, Kailir Moreno.

Coach’s Analysis: “I’m really excited about the upcoming season. We have a strong group of returning anglers, and several of them have been putting in a lot of work during the offseason to prepare for the year ahead. As a team, we’ll need to continue bringing focus, determination and a strong work ethic to every practice as we build our skills and knowledge. There are some very talented teams across the state again this year, and we’ll need to be at the top of our game if we want to compete for another championship. I was proud of what we accomplished last season and where we finished, but I know both I and the team have our sights set on bringing that state championship banner back to Mascoma this year.” — Eric Moulton

👟 CROSS COUNTRY 👟
Mascoma (from VN Season Preview)
Coach: Rick Currier (4).

League: NHIAA Division III.

Last Year: Boys — 12th at states; Girls — no team score (had one runner).

Top Returners: Boys — Seniors: Carl Russell, Karson Rogers; Juniors: John Runnion Bareford, Blake Howard. Girls — Senior: Izzy Currier.

Newcomers: Boys — Freshmen: Ransom Donigian, Vinnie Tempel. Girls — Freshmen: Paige Reney, Maddy Song, Grace King, Nobelee Cappetta, Aurellia Richardson; Eighth Grade: Brooklyn Rice.

Coach’s Analysis: Boys — “The boys are going to be very strong at the top, led by seniors Carl Russell and Karson Rogers and ultra-talented incoming freshman Ransom Donigian. If we can find a way to close the gap to them with our No. 4 and No. 5 runners, the boys can also make a run at returning to the Meet of Champions, after qualifying in 2024 as the Division III state champions.” Girls — “This will be our first girls team since 2021. They are young, but they are very talented. If they can improve their strength to adjust to the longer distance and bigger hills at the high school level, even with five freshmen and an eighth grader to join our lone senior Izzy Currier, these girls could make a run at qualifying for the Meet of Champions. Watch for Paige Reney to make a lot of noise individually as a freshman this season. We’re really just looking for growth from them as young high school runners, but won’t be shocked by anything they can accomplish.” — Rick Currier

Our success will come down to teamwork, communication, consistency and a strong work ethic. Key moment: Mitchell’s second goal before halftime would be the go-ahead as Fall Mountain added two late.

Stevens turns the noise down on Mascoma
WEST CANAAN — With about 5½ minutes left in the contest, Kasey Morin played hero for the Stevens High boys soccer team by ripping a shot from the top of the 18-yard box to put his squad ahead as the Cardinals claimed an eventual 3-1 win over Mascoma High on Tuesday...Stevens got on the board early, as Chapman put his squad up 1-0 about a minute and a half into the game, set up by a nice through ball from Churchill.

It was pretty much all Cardinals from then on, as the visitors owned possession for most of the half and mounted scoring chances. However, all of those opportunities went past the net, hit the crossbar or found the mitts of Royals goalkeeper Nic DeFelice.

Despite the lack of possession, the Royals did have some opportunities to even the score in the first half. The best came with about 13½ minutes remaining when a throw-in found the feet of Bryce Porter at the top of the six-yard box, and he sent the ball over the net.

The Royals eventually tied the match, though, in the second half. About six minutes into the frame, an attempted clearance from Stevens bounced off the face of Ian Massecar to the feet of Porter, who shook a defender, made a run and put a shot into the back of the net.

As the half drew on, the Cardinals continued to hog possession and mount chances, but DeFelice kept coming up big for the Royals.

Mascoma head coach Stuart Kinsman wrote in a score report to the Valley News that his keeper’s performance was incredible: “He kept us in this game.”

Eventually, though, the dam would break as Morin put the Cardinals ahead, and Ruffin added to the margin in the waning minutes to clinch the victory...

Kelsey Hardy Joins Mascoma Coaching Staff, Will Lead Girls Basketball Program.

Superintendent Amanda Isabelle and Athletic Director Stephen Stebbins share that Kelsey Hardy will join the Mascoma Regional High School athletics program as girls varsity basketball head coach.

Hardy comes to Mascoma from neighboring Lebanon High School, where she has served as both basketball and soccer coach for the junior varsity teams.

“I look forward to building relationships with these young women and with members of the Mascoma community,” Hardy said. “I am honored to have the opportunity to be a source of guidance and support to these student-athletes and help them perform at their best.”

Hardy has taught English at the high school level. She currently works in child care and family support. She also consults parents seeking support for children with specific behavioral and educational needs.

Kelsey plays basketball in a men’s pick up league and trains in Muay Thai kickboxing. She writes non-fiction, poetry and music, and enjoys singing and playing acoustic guitar.

She is the parent of a third grader who loves sports and looks forward to rooting on the Mascoma Royals this season.

If you take a look at the link below for a list of Mascoma student-athletes who have gone on to play at the college level, one thing would stand out pretty quickly: one of the sports Mascoma has most regularly prepared for the next level is FIELD HOCKEY! Approximately 21% of the alumni we've been tracking since the MVRHS Class of 2015 are field hockey players. The current program numbers are down, and so we are sharing the following information from the coaching staff. Please reach out to Coach Pushee if you have any questions.

"🚨🚨 ATTENTION!! Students, alumni, parents, community members, we need your help. We need a couple more players in order to have a season this year. Mascoma’s Field Hockey program has been going strong for over 40 years at the school. We need your help to ensure it continues. This program has meant a lot to a lot of people and it is important for it to continue. We need your help! Please email [email protected] and keep an eye out here for updates and times for our preseason that starts next week. 🚨🚨"
