Happy Birthday, William Lindsay White!
W.L.W. was born on June 17, 1900 in Emporia to William Allen and Sallie Lindsay White. During his teenage years he worked for the family owned newspaper, The Emporia Gazette. W.L.W. graduated from Emporia High School in 1918. In December 1918, father and son traveled to Europe and while in Paris witnessed the signing of the Treaty of Versailles officially ending World War I.

W.L.W. was an accomplished, award-winning author and journalist. He was a war correspondent in Europe before World War II and wrote for the Washington Post and Fortune magazine. He also wrote several screenplays and over a dozen books, three of which were made into successful movies.

After his father's death in 1944, W.L.W. took over the family newspaper and also finished his father's autobiography, which was awarded a Pulitzer Prize. W.L.W. died in 1973 and is buried in the family plot in Maplewood Memorial Lawn Cemetery in Emporia.
