Burlingame Fire Department History – Protecting Equipment and Order (May 1897)

In the May 27, 1897 edition of the Osage County Chronicle, a public notice outlines regulations regarding the use of fire department equipment.

According to City Ordinance No. 15, Section 9, no person was permitted to remove ladders, buckets, or other fire apparatus from the engine room unless it was for an active fire or by direct order of the Fire Chief. Violations of this ordinance carried a fine ranging from $5 to $30.

The notice, issued under Chief J. F. Mehl, emphasized the importance of protecting equipment and preventing unnecessary interference with fire department operations.

This reflects an increasing level of organization and accountability within the department, as well as the need to safeguard essential equipment for emergency use.

Despite responding to a structure fire and various other service calls, crews took the time to pay tribute to one of our own who served. We are privileged to play a small role in demonstrating our gratitude and appreciation for those who have served our nation.
