Back-to-School and the Battle with Germs

We’re only two weeks into the school year, and Jo has already caught a bug. She’s been complaining all week about not feeling well, and her attitude has matched. Because school just started, we both tried to enforce the ā€œpush through itā€ mentality. But Thursday morning, she couldn’t move and was hurting pretty bad. That’s when I had to face the fact that we had pushed her too hard and she needed to stay home.

The day consisted of nausea, pain, tears, and a fever. At one point, she looked at me and said, ā€œThis is how I’ve been feeling at school.ā€ It broke my heart to realize how much she’d been struggling, trying to keep up when her body just wasn’t able.

With her compromised immune system, what might be a minor bug for another kid hits Jo much harder. Recovery takes longer, and it’s just not as simple as a day or two of rest. So today, we’re hitting pause, giving her the time and care she needs to recover at home.

To all the parents out there facing similar struggles, I see you. It’s a tough balance between wanting our kids to be resilient and recognizing when they need to rest. Let’s be gentle with ourselves and our kids, giving them the space they need to heal.

(I’m trying to catch up on all messages and calls from yesterday due to unplugging, so bare with me)

šŸ‘‡It doesn’t matter how old, young, who you are, where you work, or work with. We’re all in this together. We want to hear from you on what you have found that best works for you, your child, or patient.

We know Lymphedema is not a one size fits all management style and we see things being used in one region and not the other.

Help us show the best finds and potentially help someone else who has exhausted their provided options. šŸ¤—

The cold effects the Lymph just as much as the heat. As we prepare to transition into new seasons make sure you understand the effects of weather and your lymphedema. :)

Managing lymphedema is like learning a dance. Sometimes, you're in the flow, maintaining your rhythm, and other times, you need to go back to practice—revisiting the decongestive stage to refine your steps. Wearing compression garments is crucial during the maintenance phase, helping you stay in sync. Remember to replace them every 3-6 months. Needing to reenter the decongestive stage doesn’t mean you’ve failed; it’s just part of the process. Stay patient, keep moving, and remember, it’s your dance, and you control the rhythm.
